It is not extremely user-friendly (my opinion as a parent), but the kids are taught how to use it right from P1 age during their computer lab lessons. So I suppose even the younger ones can figure their way around it after some time.
The kids used it during their compulsory HBL period during the Covid lockdown. For assignments. There is apparently a question bank for each subject syllabus that the teachers can pick & choose to “assign” as work for the kids. Videos to enhance learning as well. Not easy or intuitive to find, but I can probably write down the steps for u if u need.
They will need their school-assigned username & password to access SLS. So unless they are already enrolled in SG schools and on Leave of Absence, they can’t go in. -
Thanks for the feedback. I know about the LOA restriction, but I think some of their kids, at least the Pr school ones, should be on LOA. The sec school ones are definitely not on LOA, though. MOE’s website says that those not on LOA can write in to MOE to request access, but if it’s not easy to use, it may not be worth the trouble.
So it’s basically a teacher-directed thing? Not something kids or parents (who have not been exposed to it in school lessons) can go in and navigate easily? I would like to see something that’s organised by level, subject and topic, with full coverage of the syllabus so parents can access what they need to help their kids prepare. Not close to that, I suppose?
This is something I am really interested in, for the sake of overseas Singaporeans. We had to DIY for our kids before we came back to Singapore, and I have seen a lot of parents struggling. And many families won’t even consider going overseas at all because it seems so hard to return. Now that SLS exists, it seems a waste not to make it also a resource for Singaporeans planning to return.
I am prepared to write to MOE to make suggestions if need be. But since I can’t even see what’s there (my kids are not in school anymore), I’d be talking in a vacuum. I’ve asked a teacher-contact if she can show me what’s there - I hope we can arrange something. -
It’s basically a platform for students to receive their assignments from their various teachers. So each account is customized based on what subject combination they are doing in school. So the kids are trained how to log in and click on their to-do list and get the items done.
It is not so much a resource buffet/bank for the self learner. So it is not what u expect - I think I are hoping it is a Chapter by chapter learning plan for homeschoolers to follow. Nope. It is more of a supplement to those textbooks that the kids are taught in school.
But...there is a link somewhere that interested students can click...to access syllabus materials. I’m not sure how complete it is. It didn’t look voluminous. I spotted it myself as a parent, and I went to kaypoh other levels (Eg Sec 4 O level Music) to see what they were learning.
Your teacher friend would be able to show you more effectively from her end, what they have to select from inside and what assignments they can “push”/deliver to the kids. -

Thanks! Yes, my hope is that it will be easier for parents to prepare their kids for SPERS, or for school internal placement tests on return. I wonder if it's worth raising the issue and pressing for something more helpful?

Well if it’s for exams purposes then…as we KSP parents know…the textbooks just teach the bare bones of the concept. Not much in way of real-life exam questions. U can’t pass an exam just studying the text. And the MOE sanctioned portal resources will not have much towards sufficient exam prep.
Better off buying those assessment books & mock/practice papers (whichever level) from Open Schoolbag website. I believe they deliver internationally now.
Free actual school exam papers available for own printing too (just Google search). Secondary levels may have fewer available. -

To prepare the kids for SPERS, just use those websites where you can download some (top?) schools’ exams papers for free.

SLS is designed to complement in-person teaching. It is not meant to replace in-person teaching at the moment. -
