I saw in newspaper a few days ago on a vacuum cleaner that promises to clear 99.9% (iifc) of dustmites and thier wastes. Can’t remember the brand offhand, maybe you want to flip through the papers. It’s a small advert at the bottom of one of the pages.

          Stayhome,

Is it the angmoh allergist? If so that’s the one we saw, but at the skin center. I feel he is allergic to some food as well but the allergist did not want to do a comprehensive food testing. His belief is that dustmite is the main cause - which both dh and I disagree with. We feel that his dustmite allergy kick in only after the skin is broken.

But anyway… I bought the miele a week ago. Been using it religiously, at least once or twice a day for the bed and sofa. I’m determined to eliminate potential contributing causes! According to my internet research, it’s the best for dustmite - fully sealed, multilayered self sealing dustbag, and I like that I can put it at low setting for the floor and it is really quiet. I got their promotion set, which comes with the hepa filter, and I purchased an additional power head for mattresses and sofas. All in just over six hundred dollars.

Results - clean but ds is still scratching at night. But at least it’s not a nightlong affair as before. I clean his wounds with antiseptic everyday and vacuum every morning to minimise secondary irritations. He has been on
restricted diet for over a year already. I am now doing gluten free diet for him and we’ll see if that can help clear it up totally.

Advertisement - is it for a small handheld device that’s certified by the Japanese government? I saw the ad after I bought the miele, otherwwise I would be interested because of the apparent ease of use. It’s suppose to get 93.3 percent of dust mites, which is lowerthan miele, but the convenience may mean you can use it twice a day and in the car as well.

Hi, ya I tried already. Didn't help, but i do think my ds also has other food-related allergies even if the allergist doesn't think so (he didn't test).

Rainbow was the first vacuum cleaner that came to my mind, and frankly, if it helps, I don't mind the price because we are really suffering. I borrowed one for use and it didn't seem to make much difference - but it sure sucks out a lot of dust!! 🙂 I did more internet research later and apparently it doesn't really help with dust mites. The particles are returned into the air and unless you clean out the bowl really well after each use, it can breed more mold. That's what I read lah, don't have time to pull out the research now. But I know some people really love their Rainbows. 🙂

btw, i just notice today that ds2's feet are improving!! I managed to shower him today without him crying! Hooray! Keeping up with the vacuuming and the gluten-free diet...

                Hi deminc,

The doctor ds saw is Dr Koh, he is the head of department. We had done the skin pick test which test for Saline, Dustmite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus), Dustmite(Blomia tropicalis), Animal Danger (Cat, Felis omesticus), Egg white, cow’s milk, soy protein. Ds was tested positive for Dustmite type I mentioned, the rest negative. It also test for Histamine which act as control, this must get positive in order the results will be accurate. That is before taking this test, the patient cannot take any antihistamine. We had decided to stop seeing Dr Koh. As ds was only 2 yr at that time, all the medications he had taken has side effect on him. When using nebuliser he will get very stress up which is no good for mental development. If take oral, the ventolin will caused fast heart beat. I really feel it, it beat so fast that worry me. And most time oral medication don’t work. So I gave up to see Chinese doctor. After taking TCM for so many years he has been more settle. During the last few years, we had been running between Chinese doctor and KKH (cheaper than seeing Dr Koh). Sometimes, we need to use nose drop given by KKH then the sinus go off. Example, my sis left her hamster with us for one week and ds got breathing difficultives. TCM also don’t help, have to see KKH doctor. Then, he prescribed him a nose drop to clear his nostril. Luckily, do not need to use any inhalers.

Dr Koh did mentioned if don’t take care well, ds may get asthma attack.

I think you may bring your ds for the test to find the exact problem. Then is easy for you to help him. Beside the skin pick test there is another type of test. Can’t remember now, I think is the blood test. Check with the doctor.

I don’t use fabric sofa at home as it trap dust and dirt. I use half leather sofa, easy to clean.

Hi, I bought it from Best Denki at Takashimaya. FYI the brand is not available at courts.

We saw the allergist at the National Skin Center. He also works at NUH. He was tested for three strains of dustmites, egg and prawn. I felt the allergist did not listen to my feedback but had his own preconceived notions. Most of the skin doctors do not think it’s caused by food allergies because he’s turning three soon. But from our experience, we know he was allergic to egg (chronic diarrhea) and seafood (rash wihin half an hr). But even after we avoided these and dairy ( ds1 was allergic to dairy), his eczema got worse and worse. I went to a us-based allergy forum and the mums there helped me narrow it down to a gluten or corn allergy. Testing out the theory now.

Already been to five doctors and two qualified sinsehs so I’m quite tired of all the doctors. I’m fed up at being told that there’s nothing to be done except steroids and he’s too old for food allergy related eczema. I can see with my own eyes that that is not true. Also fed up by all the Tmc medications to ‘purge’ his system. At one point he was throwing up the whole night.

If it is due to food allergy, TCM may not be suitable as it contains too many herb that may aggravate the symptom. But can try "tui na". Normally for young kid I don’t prefer accupuncture.

I had read somewhere omega oil is also good for eczema. I tried, it help to minimise the symptom. As mentioned before I was allergy to certain food. It will caused me itchy. So after taking omega oil for a few months and I still taking it daily just one tablet in the morning. I can feel the improvement. Normally if I unknowing ate food contain them, the itch will last very long. However, now the itch will just last 3 days to a week. DH has eczema on one of his hand with dry and scaly skin, NSC also prescribe steriod cream but don’t help at all. He also start to take after seeing my result. Now the hand look normal and it will outbreak only DH understress.

Do you try different type of bath for your ds. Like my ds need to use bath with moisturiser, if not the skin will be very dry and itchy. Hope this can help a bit.

                        Hi Stayhome,

sorry, been away. Thanks for the tips! Wow, I didn't know that allergic itch can last for a week! I get allergic reactions as well, but they usually last for only one night - will be very intense with facial swelling and burning palms, but usually ok by the next day. But DS2's rashes seem to be a build-up sort of reaction, so maybe it's like what you said, can last for a few weeks.

He can't take any fish/seafood products, not even fish oil. But I give him flaxseed oil. Hope that will help. He's skinny enough already.
