Hello I’m new to this forum so apologies in advance for my lack of knowledge. My kid secured a K1 place at MOE Kindergarten @ Gongshang which places him at Phase 2A(2). However, looking at GSPS’s recent history, they have 210 vacancies of which ~130 are already filled by Phase 1 and 2A(1). With 40 places reserved for 2B and 2C, this leaves only about 40 slots for Phase 2A(2).

With the opening of their MOE K and the amount of MOE K kids that fit into this category + alumni kids + school staff kids, won’t it lead to an extreme over-application for the 40 places for 2A(2)?
Does schools with MOE K open up more total vacancies to cater to this projected increase in Phase 2A(2) application?
Anyone can shed light on past recent history of similar examples and advise how it might transpire? I know its super early but I am just curious about the math.

You are going to be disappointed.

No, it’s unlikely that they will cater extra places for the school due MK allocation. If there are places left after Phase 1 and Phase 2A1, it will go to Phase 2A2. If there are more applicants than places in Phase 2A2, it will go into balloting based on the (distance) priority. For Gongshang, balloting in Phase 2A2 is going to be highly likely once MK students become eligible.

What it does mean for you is be prepared for Phase 2B and Phase 2C. If Gongshang is your choice for Phase 2C, that means have to be prepared for Phase 2Cs as well.

Typically, schools do not increase their intake to cater for \"projected increase\" like Floppy mentioned but some schools (but usually not popular ones) do increase their intake size when approaching years with more students.


GSPS balloted for SC staying > 2km for 2A2 during the 2020 Registration Exercise so it is my personal belief that the trend will remain for the 2021 Exercise.

Have a backup for 2CS like Floppy mentioned.

Edit: forgot to highlight that alumni kids go into 2A1, while MK / staff children go into 2A2. Cheers

Yeah I saw that GSPS had 2A2 balloting for >2km for 2021 reg without MOE K! With MOE K and larger pool of applicants for 2A2, not sure if it will push the balloting lever up towards 1-2km or even <1km.
That means for a certain batch of K2 students at MOE K@Gongshang, not all will secure a place into GSPS? That is so demoralising for the MOE K kid, especially when they reside within GSPS itself, so near yet so far…

My alternative should be Tampines North Pri Sch, which is also less than 1km from my residence.

MK will definitely push Phase 2A2 applications towards < 1km as all, if not most, MK students are < 1km from the primary school.

It’s also likely that former students who are supposedly in Phase 2A2 would now be compelled to sign up with the alumni association and participate in Phase 2A1. Therefore, don’t be surprised to see less places for Phase 2A2.

MK is already coming to 2 years old. Once MK was announced, I’m sure many alumni had already made the move.

Then with MK setting up at Temasek Pri, won’t the competition be out of this world? The 2A2 results for 2021 Pri 1 kids for them is already scary!! Was it because 2014 was a high birth rate year..
