Agree the medians are high. Not sure how to make sense of this data though. Is above the median good enough? What happens if a few points below median? Is median, a useful data?

Hm. Year 3 should be P3? As IP is a 6 year program... it feels like year 4 is like p4 streaming, stream into your choice of subject combination. What makes your think it’s steeper, is it because of the load or depth? Or others?

I feel year 2 to year 3 is drastic due to increase of subjects like Maths and Sciences. Yes, it’s more like P3. So is just half way mark. My elder’s experience in RV is more gradual pace. Exams are more spread out. Just have to press on.

Median is the mid-point mark - half of the students score above that mark, and half below. I feel it's a better indicator for that particular school than the average mark which can be pulled up or down by a few very high or very low marks. So if the child is scoring above the median, it means that she is in the top half of students, which in a competitive environment, would mean she is doing well. If the child is scoring just below the median, it means that a little more than 50% of students scored better than she did.

\"Good enough\" depends on what your targets and aspirations are. If you expect your child to be the top student, being near the median is bad. If you want your child to be safely in the middle of the pack, median means she is right there. If your child is usually a weak student, getting near the median is very good.

Referring to the comment about the step from Y2 to Y3, I don't know how to compare between schools. There is always a \"step up\" every couple of years since that is the way our school system is arranged. It's supposed to match the students' growing abilities and maturity, so it works for most students. Students who are a bit \"out of step\" may need a bit more coaching or help in adjusting, but they will sort it out eventually. Of course, not every student can be the top student, but the student should stay roughly in the same place in the pecking order.

When I read the first post, I had thought he meant yr 3 is like p5, where is it like a prep year for yr 4 which is like psle. From that I had thought he meant yr 3 grades dropped / are not up to expectations, like how, many people found that p5 grades dropped (there’s even a dedicated thread for that).

Of course it was later mentioned that “yr 2 to yr 3 .... more subjects”. But if it was just more subjects, why would it be compared to p5 where the number of subjects in p4 and p5 are the same?

I agree that median is a more useful data than average. But not to worry if you are below the median, if some papers are “small papers”, max marks 40 for eg, transferring one careless mistake can already cost you 2 or 3 points. You still know your stuff but your friends are less careless than you.

However, if one has entered the school through psle, one should aim to be minimally at the median (my own opinion, no one has to agree), afterall, it will be within this same cohort, that will be choosing subject combinations in jc1, and won’t you want to be able “to choose the combi than to let the combi choose you”?

Recently, after some of the AA and PPAs results were out, I hear from child that she has a friend who is feeling rather anguished (perhaps even some suicidal thoughts). The girl did not do too well last year (not sure what grades that means). For this mid-year, her overall GPA increased by 0.2, but her mum still reprimanded her e.g. something like for some graded tasks, if she had listened to her mum and do this do that, she would have gotten a better grade. Girl ranted in their chat group, and good that other girls help to console her. BTW, somehow among their friends, they will not ask for each other's results. One girl in the chat group is known to have consistently good results since primary school, but she hated to be used as a benchmark. Maybe just expect the worst, and hope for the best.
