My best friend, who is a very staunch christian, hold joss sticks and pay her respects and follow through the Buddhist way when her beloved grandma passed away. She told me that her grandma is the one who brought her up and cared for her a lot. However, she respected her grandma, so she respected her wish to be sent off the Buddhist way and she respects that and also follow through the rituals as her respect to her late grandma. She earns my respect!

a distant relative - old cousin granduncle kind, he is a Buddhist. His sons are Christians. But the old man's nephews are not. So before he passed away, he bought his own place in the temple, arranged for his nephew to hold his urn, make all the arrangement for his funeral to be carried out the Buddhist way. The moment he passed away, his sons, didn't inform their cousins, and baptized the father and held a Christian Funeral...

Thanks for sharing, treenymph. I've personally heard of ailing, dying elderly being baptised at their death bed and I suspect they're too frail to resist.

I don't think this was tree nymph's intent, she just shared what she knew about what some people had done.

Also Christian's are also human beings, so they can make mistakes. In fact there are Christians who can misinterpret the Biblical teachings too, so we have to know God based on who He is and not what Christians are.

Having said this, I do agree that this CHC issue under scrutiny now is not a function of religion so this discussion into religion is not so appropriate. This whole episode rooted from one of the seven sins embedded in most people....and that is GREED.

Durai and Ming Yi has already shown us their misdeeds when they were tempted and they were not Christians but other religions. So what really worries me is that even with a religion, it seems that it is still not a sufficient condition to counter this deadly temptation of GREED when alot of money is presented before one's eyes..... Then what else must be done?? :?

I really don't see why out of respect, Christians cannot hold joss sticks or step into temples, since they've always believed in their hearts there's only one God. The holding of joss sticks which mean nothing to them may mean the world to their elders. Kills 2 birds with a stone, as long as in their hearts, they know they only have a God.

Holding the joss sticks is not a big deal if you're just holding them, but more often than not, people hold joss sticks with religious implications. It has to do with religious beliefs. Can we allow our kids to hold joss sticks and laugh and joke at the same time? No right?

If holding joss sticks mean nothing to anybody, then can a Buddhist go thro water baptism and treat it as 'just submerged under water only'? Can a non-believer say the sinner's prayer ie. the prayer that accepts Christ into your heart and say that it's only words? Can a staunch vegetarian eat meat with the full conviction in her heart that she's definitely a vegetarian and that only the heart matters? And can I love my parents in my heart without giving them any form of allowance?

The truth is, our outward action is a reflection of what we believe inside. If you truly believe that it's the heart that matters, then you should be able to accept the explanation that when it comes to respecting their elders, christians can respect them in their heart without violating their own religious convictions.
