I don't think they can avoid balloting altogether unless you mean the situation where RI, RGS ballot at AL 4 and people go :stompfeet: :stompfeet: :stompfeet: . I do think the past data (2019-2020 from which the two simulations were run and all of the prior years that I'm sure they've looked at) is somewhat lacking in that none of it can account for how kids prepare differently now under AL vs. how they did under t-score. I.e. there's a reasonable case to assume AL COPs could become more demanding (now or over time).
Maybe MOE wants to avoid many getting AL1 and run into a situation that balloting is required for most admission to top sch? There clearly need to be a good differentiation at the highest level to be meritocratic?
That being said, many thought the 2020 papers were relatively easy and the most demanding COPs were still AL6 (as many had predicted), so there seems to be a fair amount of room for students to score well/better before balloting at what some may consider an unfair or awkward level occurs.
My sense is that every year there is likely to be one pretty tough paper. Not sure what to say if the 2021 kiddos were really thrown two curveballs. -

I think the kiddos did their best, give them lots of love and hugs. I think our gov is also trying to toughen up parents… see how much endurance and if our heart can take it with all the covid rules, mask at oral, difficult papers. Very disappointing. No wonder kids got mental health issue, parents are stress, tuition making money. I wonder any one is going to set up a survey or petition? This year both papers are tough, not sure on the remaining papers…. -
It is a super tough paper today. Likewise for yesterday's English. I'm very very concern for what will happened to their result. 😓

I understand; both the guinea pig batch and the indicative levels may or may not be accurate so how choose? As for the later (indicative levels or prior year levels once we have a history), this is going to be an issue every year unless the difficulty of the papers is held constant year-to-year. I.e. if the papers are easy and everyone scores great, ballot will occur at levels where everyone thought they were \"guaranteed in.\" T-score was somewhat agnostic to the difficulty of the papers in this regard, and COPs could only move so much (plus the S1 Option Form process was different).
Understand that S1 posting is relative but we are the Guinea pigs batch and it's like asking us to choose while we are blindsided. And judging on the difficulty of the papers, this has made the estimated AL score given to us a few months back no longer accurate or close to accurate. How do the kids rate today's math paper vs. the 2019 paper?
I understand the frustration if both papers have been set extremely difficult. But please remember that while AL is an absolute scoring system the PSLE Scores and S1 Posting are still a \"relative\" game. I.e. everyone's scores (raw marks) may be lower than they had hoped, but you still just need to score better than those around you (to get into the school you desire).
The difficulty of the papers does have the potential to swing AL COPs more than the difficulty of the papers could swing things under t-score (since t-score is by definition a relative score). So there could be some ambiguity with the S1 Option forms this year and do you risk it or assume the indicative COPs hold.
Regardless, what's done is done. Hope the kids can get a good lunch, reset the mind a bit, and get ready for MT and Science next week. Good luck and don't give up/get discouraged! -
Agreed that at the end of the day, it is still in on a relative basis when it comes to the school choice and selection.
However, with such papers, I am worried about the mental health of the students having to cope with the covid situation and getting whacked by the papers. -

As parents, we must remain calm and remind our children that no matter what results we love them. Praise them for the efforts and also highlight that if they get it wrong, the others would get it wrong too.

Don't understand why need to set a paper so hard that several children have to cry over it. My DD was busy consoling her friends after paper 1 as some could not finish on time. Paper 2 was very hard too according to 2 top math Olympiad students in DD class. It is really demoralizing for the children as the first 2 papers (English & Math) were kind of tough. I believe every child has work really hard for this national exam despite all the disruption due to COVID. Now my DD class chat is full of hates and curses for MOE and the Minister. I really pity them and hope PSLE will be over soon. All I can do now is try motivate her to not give up and continue to do her best for the next 3 more papers next week
