After so much elaborating on the Tscore versus AL, do not forget the ultimate objective of secondary school selection is to group the students together according to their learning ability, some students can learn at a faster rate than the rest. So if your kids fall into top 3%, then can proceed to apply the top 4 RI/RGS/HCI/NYGH. Others can apply other schools, it is not going to be the end of the world for them.
To score min 90 marks in P6 exam is no walk in the park. if a student can achieve 90 marks for all 4 subjects they will be AL4, good for RI/RGS/HCI/NYGH. And certainly, students will need to work hard to achieve this. I think what MOE is trying to do here is to manage parents' expectations and I am sure most parents will be very happy if their children can consistently score 90 and above for their exams.Liew Nga Wing\" post_id=\"2041794\" time=\"1633963996\" user_id=\"195250:
I wonder whether any parents will tell their kids not to study too hard because getting score 90 or score 100 will ended up in the same school. As a civil servant, I cannot imagine if my boss ask me not to work too hard because I will get the same salary with my same grade colleagues according to our salary scale.
The responsibility of a student is to study hard and civil servant is to work hard for the Government. It is understandable and should not be so calculative and compare whether ending up with the same benefits with others who may be putting less effort.
Going to school to study is for increase one's own knowledge and cultivate good character preparing to serve Singapore....not only play with existing exam system to see how to get into one's dream school.
And of course, the current AL system will be a disadvantage to students with 1 or 2 very weak subjects. This perhaps is the reason why some may feel 90 is not good enough.
-

AL4 is equivalent to 275
AL5 is equivalent to 270
AL6 is equivalent to 265
AL7 is equivalent to 260
AL8 is equivalent to 255
AL9 is equivalent to 250
Target is to go into express stream is good enough, especially for guy for needs to serve NS. -

HCI - 257
MGS - 257
2) The raw score difference between each AL band between A4 to AL7 is 5, hence it's not possible for t-score difference to be 5 as well.
3) AL8 and AL9 is tricky, not as per your estimate.
Suggest you do more research on this subject before sharing. -

Yes, only the AL score will do. We will have (at least) some reference point to assess the cohort performance.
Sorry, still not very clear about the poll. So you only want the AL score to be reported? The idea is so that we can have a gauge of the reported distribution of our sample? What is the point?
I think a sample size of above 1000 responses should be good enough and hopefully they are not skewed to only parents aiming for Top 4.
The poll will give a % distribution of AL scores and parents can use as a guide when estimating the chances of their secondary school choices for their child/children.
Cumulative %
~3% : ESIS
10%. : IP
slightly < 50% : AL 4-16
\"As we expect slightly less than half of the PSLE cohort to score AL 1-4 for Standard subjects, the upper AL bands have comparatively narrower ranges. At the middle to lower ALs, students’ scores are more widely distributed, hence finer distribution in raw mark ranges are less meaningful.\" - MOE
For simplicity, we assume slightly less than half of the PSLE cohort will be in the range AL 4-16. If the cumulative total % exceeds 50% for this range (i.e. overall the cohort does well), we may have to adjust the indicative COP by 1 AL for all secondary schools since
\"slight fluctuations from year to year in schools' COPs can happen and would typically be by 1 AL. \" - MOE. -
I'd say that the statement is true as the kids on the t-score system were subjected to \"bell-curves\" thus for years whereby the paper was deemed to be difficult, an A* might have a raw score of 80+

Personally I have also heard (from some educators although this info was never verified or confirmed by official sources) of how the A stars might have been moved year on year, ie eg A* may or may not be 91 and above, depending on difficulty of paper.

I also like to believe the raw scores in psle in prior years were on bell curve and not strictly above 91 for A*. My 3 girls were quite evidenced. They had never gotten beyond 85 for languages in a single exam setting in sch yet in psle, all 3 got A*… impossible for them to score above 91 in my opinion since I did check in with them on their answers post psle etc. Anyway going forward, its AL score. Someone brought up a point about referencing to ESIS cutoff. If I have p6 kid now and troubled about whether eligible for top 4 or not, I will use the ESIS cutoff as a good gadge.

Agreed, I think A* is not 91+, my DD had only managed 80+ for both English and science in Pri 5 and 6, but when PSLE result was released last year, she had 4 A*.

Yup and their compo always hover around 33/40 only. Oral nvr even close to full marks. How to get 91.

The statement is referring to performance grading not t-score grading because it's impossible to score 91 for any subject once you turn raw score into t-score.
I'd say that the statement is true as the kids on the t-score system were subjected to \"bell-curves\" thus for years whereby the paper was deemed to be difficult, an A* might have a raw score of 80+

It will be better if we can talk about facts instead of what we think or hearsay etc. Perhaps someone can write to MOE to confirm instead of conjecturing.

Supposed what you said is correct, if A* grade moves up or down, then rest of the grade will follow. Which mean a passing grade of 50 may become 45, or 54 if suppose the A* jump from 91 to 95.
So what is the intention of the grading system if every year the value is fluctuating?
