If the boy is in IP programme now in Year 2, would you advise him to drop HCL if his HCL is strong? He said he wanted to drop HCL to concentrate on subjects that he like and felt chinese exam is easy in year 5. Most of his classmates are still hanging on to HCL except for a few who are weak.

If he’s strong in HCL, just continue with perseverance. Then by Yr 5 & 6, he can focus more on his other subjects as

        1. Language B is very elementary, if yr boy is in IB curriculum.

        2. Other subjects at Yr 5, will need more focus, rather than try to struggle trying to get thro Chinese again rather than spend time on classes & hmwork no matter how easy

        3. You gain more & psychologically one feels more enthusiastic spending tt same duration of time on learning sth new & additional qualification to affirm varied learning.

DS nvr did HCL in Primary but picked up HCL as his PSLE score qualifies him. He perseveres for 4 years doing HCL in a h’hold that don’t speak much Mandarin & probably weaker than yr boy. Language somehow helps him to clearly distinguish his left & right brain application. Gives him more motivation to learn diff things & still manage to maintain doing Sciences in the specially selected triple Science class in his cohort. Now he’s looking fwd to put HCL behind him & focus pushing last lap effort on his Math & sciences and more time for internship & projects.

It’s only our perspective, to add to yr consideration.

          Hi,

What is a good score in Y3 IP?
+3 bonus points is for Discipline of Thought (DOT) and Collaborative Study Options (CSO)
So is it (rawscore+bonus)/45 or (rawscore+bonus)/42?
          Appreciate any advice.

          Thanks!

A good score is 40 points/45, generally. The IB would say that 36/45 is great, but ACS(I) has its standards.

Each subject in the ‘constellation’ of six chosen subjects would have 7 points, so 42/42 max excluding the 3 bonus for DOT and CSO, which are S3/4 versions of the IB TOK and EE. Including bonus it’s 42+3 max out of 45.

sorry correct me if my understanding is wrong? If students take HCL in year 1-4, then they can't take Chinese B in year 5 & 6, no? Or as long as they don't sit for O' level HCL exam and get a Pass, they are eligible to take Chinese B during IB? There were some discussions on this topic, but I couldn't recall the exact details.

If they pass HCL, they can't take Chinese B because the IB requires that you do not take a subject at lower level than they have already passed. Also, they have met MOE criteria for MT. This means they have to fill the IB L2 (Language Acquisition) slot with another language, probably taken at 'ab initio' (i.e. basic, tourist standard) level.

If they didn't take HCL, they must take Chinese B if they're still bound by MOE criteria for MT.

                      Hi,

Anyone has a good tutor/tuition center to recommend for Chemistry?
                      Prepping for Y4 IP.
                      Thank you.
