Are we using too many ACRONYMS??
-
My children, nephews and nieces are teaching me new ‘teen’ and ‘pre-teen’ slang and acronyms almost every week. Things like flex, cap/nocap, stan, smh, yeet, cheugy, Iykyk, simp…
You are right. As long as both parties understand each other, you can use slang or acronyms in daily conversation. nothing wrong with that.
Can’t say the same for our ministries and bureaucracies though. Its almost as though they have an acronym KPI to meet. -

You know how it is. If you can't convince them, confuse them.
Because COVID is a complex disease, it seems that it is not only changing the world... but changing our language. What with ART tests, CB, HBL, HRW, SHN, VTL, WFH... the list goes on and on. I just googled and am aghast at the huge quantity of acronyms that I've never even heard of.
I just wish that people will stick to giving acronyms only on difficult to remember names like mRNA (Messenger Ribonucleic Acid). Doing acronyms for easy to remember words like circuit breaker CB or stay-at-home SHN makes it seem that we are trying to be, um, \"professional\" or something. What is worst is that it gives some permanence to our situation, which we are trying to desperately get out of and forget.
Remember that the purpose of having a language is to communicate, and communication works only when both parties understand each other. For now, I will have to rely on Google everytime I come across a new term... :faint: -

We have to adapt to other people's way of writing instead of others have to change their habits to accommodate us. This is an important part in a good Interpersonal Relationships. -

I work in the Comms field! I spend a lot of my thought energy on trying to ensure that my messages are understood by the recipients. It's not always successful, but it's important to try. I think that SG authorities' media and comms staff/contractors should try to use more meaningful or catchy words/phrases rather than rely on people remembering and decoding so many acronyms. -
Yes, an acronym usually has a field of study surrounding it, and used by people who actually have to use the term all the time. By imposing an acronym on us, we ARE expected to find out what it means since we have to use it all the time. So I guess we are all learning a lot because of covid...
