Yes, the reporting time is 8am.

My DD will be in sec 4 next year so will share some of her experience in nygh.

It is definitely not a walk in the park but neither is it excessively stressful. The girls do lead a very busy life, not just because of academic demands but they have a lot of other school activities that eat into their time. I think the biggest adjustment is the expectation that they have to be very independent in their learning. Textbooks are mostly left at home as the teachers hardly use the textbooks in class. Students are expected to pre-read the textbooks and go to class and contribute to the very interesting teaching activities and discussions in class. I do find the way they learn very interesting.

Most teachers are great. Very caring and always open for consultation. As long as the girls are willing to put in the effort, the teachers really go all out to guide them.

There are assessments per term but not all are pen and paper in class assessment. Some might be group projects, speeches, written assignment, etc.

Honestly, based on my understanding, what I have described is probably not unique to nygh. You probably see similar description for most IP programs. There are of course special programs that are unique to nygh. Those your girl can find out more from teachers and senior in school.

1) do you find the girls go for tuition in IP programs? Like there’s a need for it? Because I am not familiar with IP requirements at all and not sure if she will cope well. We try not to give her tuition unless it’s needed in primary school, like Chinese.

2) do you find your girl face time management issue or have to work late into nights for work? Does she have leisure time on weekends?

3) what is the usual dismissal time for the girls in lower sec?

Just to share, hope this helps. My child is in NYGH, while my niece is in RGS, so my bro and I often exchange parenting and school notes.

1) Vast majority of my daughter's classmates in NYGH don't go for tuition. NYGH provides extra remedial lessons for weaker subjects and advanced talent development programmes for stronger subjects. They are very on the ball - for eg. in HCL, all the kids who didn't do \"as well\" in their PSLE Chinese are asked to take a diagnostic test, and then siphoned into remedial classes if needed.

In fact, there are fewer egs of \"tiger parenting\" in my child's NYGH class. This is a huge and welcome relief for us and many other parents in the class, I'm sure. For me and my partner, it is a huge mental relief to be able to be \"hands off\" and count on the school to look after my child. My daughter, through the year, gives me egs of classmates (and herself) not always doing homework on time, etc, but at the end of the year exams there are still many A1s and A2s, based on the students' own efforts.

2) One of the best things about NYGH is the HUGE amount of support given to parents. The school teachers will ask to speak to you if they are concerned about your child's welfare, including social and academic life. There are many very caring teachers in NYGH. The school also organises parenting seminars (they tied up with Lakeside, among other Parenting VWOs), to help parents with their Q&A regarding how to parent Teenagers and help them with time management.

My girl is much more relaxed in lower sec than in Pri 6 :snooze:

3) Lower sec dismissal time is usually between 2-3pm, as it starts later at 8am. But due to CCA or Talent Development programmes, there might be later dismissal times.

I will start with the easier question : dismissal time for most days I think is around 2:30pm for lower sec. But there will be 2 to 3 days of CCA; for some, 1 day of 3rd lang and often, there might be special workshops (extra stuff which the girls choose to attend base on their interest). That's why I cannot remember for sure what her dismissal time is as she usually reach home close to 6pm.

Is tuition a must? Hard to say for sure. Really depends on the child. Mine did not have tuition at all in lower sec. But she started tuition in sec 3. Will she fail if she does not have tuition? 100% will not fail but she also most likely will not get the A she wants. So there is really no straightforward answer to that question.

There is definitely an adjustment period in terms of time management. Things were a bit more messy for her in sec 1 term 1 but they do learn to adjust quite quickly. Sec 1 was a honeymoon year in terms of workload so I guess it gave them the time and space to make the necessary adjustment.

She could sleep before 10pm in lower sec. The late nights only started in sec 3. Academic workload has increased as the number of core subjects have increased. At the same time, her extra curricular commitment has also increased. Sec 3 is the year whereby they have to shoulder a lot more responsibilities for their CCA too. And she also took on special programs which again meant extra workload. But there are girls who chose not to take on so much extra stuff so I guess again, it still depends on the girls.
