Congrats on your girl's stellar results. Yes there is a possibility of balloting at RGS for AL6 but I would think there is a decent chance. Simply put, it's hard to tell how many AL6 were accepted last year and what the probability is.

I'm in similar situation but am hestiant coz I understand from another thread that Nanyang requires min of B3 as passing grade for HCL 'O' levels while RGS only requires a C6 pass? Anyone knows and can verify? How abt the passing grade for HCL at St Nicks and NJC?

Gotta choose carefully and know what our kids are in for. NYGH may not be a good fallback option if not confident in excelling in HCL.

Thanks!

U are referring to o level HCL. HCL is default in NYGH, however HCL is optional in RGS. But trust me, my eldest DD in RGS takes HCL, and from what I knew, I did not heard of any chinese who did not took HCL in RGS. U took o level HCL in sec 4, and if pass, there is no need for u to study Chinese in jc.

If u did not took o level HCL, u still need to study Chinese as a subject in jc.

Please correct me if I am wrong, from what I know, in RI and RGS, students need to take HCL, and pass O-level HCL in order to drop Chinese in JC. (I think a pass means D7 or better)
But in HCI (and most probably in NYGH), students not only need to take HCL, they need to attain a minimum score of B4 in order to drop Chinese for A-level. So if a student in HCI scores C6 in his 'O'-level HCL, he needs to take Chinese in Year 5/6, cannot drop.
My understanding is the same as yours. Having said that, most kids who qualify for HCI/NYGH should have no issues getting the min B4 for HCL. In fact, with the SAP culture, I believe that majority of them would be getting A1/2.

So I don’t see the B4 requirement as an obstacle at all. As long as the kids don’t hate the language, they definitely can do it.

Hello,

My kid scored AL10 and we stay in the East. We are keen to go for Anglican High or Chung Cheng, but don’t have HC. Will my kid be disadvantaged if we put either of these schools as option 1? Grateful for anyone’s guidance. Thank you.

How does the tie breaker work exactly?

I understand how the sequence and everything. But that’s in single school situation. How does it work when there are multiple students and multiple schools?

Let’s say there are two students, Joe Al 8D and Jill AL 8M. There are two schools, A and B, each with 1 seat left. A is SAP school and B is not. Joe and Jill are the only people competing for the last seat.

Joe’s choices are:
1. RI (COP 6 so he didn’t get in)
2. School B
3. School A

Jill’s choices are:
1. School A
2. School B

From school A perspective, Joe is ahead with D in HCL. From school B perspective, both students are the same so need to ballot.

So will Joe places into A first, then Jill gets into B without need to ballot. Or do they ballot for school B first, and the one not getting it go to School A?

Also note in this situation the COP for school A would be different…
My girl has AL6M, am thinking of this order:

1. RGS (COP = 6)
2. NYG (COP = 7M)
3. St Nick IP (COP = 7M)
4. NJC (COP = 7)
5. SCGS (COP = 😎
6. Dunman / Cedar Girl (COP = 😎

She is only interested in RGS so though chance of balloting is high, I think should at least try. And I am prepared that NYG will also have no chance.

Will she be safe for St Nick / NJC?

Add on, to go into respective jc, RGS requires 60% marks in every subject, an average B4 in every subject, before u can proceed to RJC. NYGH requires 65% marks in every subject, an average B3 in all subjects before proceeding to hwa Chung jc. This is not specific to HCL, but average in all subjects.
Not sure about NYGH but are you sure about RGS promo requirements? For RI Y4 to Y5, only needs GPA 2.0 (50%) and it’s only taking core 5 + 1 best subject for computation, not all subjects.

Are you saying that RGS’ promo requirements are different from RI’s? I find this a little puzzling tbh.

At HCI, depending on end JC1 CL exam result, student can drop CL at JC2.

Hi everyone… we are kinda stuck and would like to seek your kind advice and views on the choices for my daughter.

My daughter has AL7 for her PSLE and we are staying in bukit panjang area. She wants to go into IP and SCGS seems to be a good choice with COP of 8. But if she can’t get in, she prefers the O-Level track of MGS (COP 8). MGS IP COP is 6, and we called the school about our chances today. The person said we can give it a try for their IP as 1st choice, and if we put MGS O level as 2nd choice, she will go into O Level if she can’t get into IP.

So can I ask what is a better option in your opinion?

Option A
#1 - MGS IP (COP 6)
#2 - MGS O-Level (COP 😎
#3 - SCGS IP (COP 😎
#4 - SCGS O-Level (COP 9)

Option B
#1 - MGS IP (COP 6)
#2 - SCGS IP (COP 😎 => will we still stand a high chance here since we put as 2nd choice?
#3 - MGS O-Level (COP 😎
#3 - SCGS O-Level (COP 9)

Option C - Forget about MGS IP
#1 - SCGS IP (COP 😎
#2 - MGS O-Level (COP 😎
#3 - SCGS O-Level (COP 9)

Which option will be better in your opinion?

Thank you in advance!

Hi and congrats. Without HCL your kid will be at a \"disadvantage\" as all AL10(D), AL10(M), and AL10(P) will be allocated a spot first. However, I still think you have a good chance to get a seat at one of them. I'd put Chung Cheng High Main (indicated 11(M)) first and Anglican (indicated 12(P)) second followed by some others after that (in case you are unlucky). Good luck!

Hi all,

My son got AL11(P). Pls advise if it’s safe to put the first 3 choices as below.
1. Chung Chong High (Main) 11M
2. Anglican High 12P
3. Ngee Ann 12

I hear the arguments on cohort size but have wondered how much it really matters? I can see how it makes more CCAs available but many of them are still competitive as heck to get a spot in…
I brought it up first because everytime I see a comparison between njc/tjc, and another school (any school), my first alarm is cca. And this cca thing stems from cohort size. A nephew was in one of these, he was in the sec school section of a jc, and some ccas are taken up by dsa, couple that with fewer ccas, and then factor in your own flair/talent or lack of talent, and then your interest, you end up with almost nothing to choose. They have no uniform group. If you are not sporty and not musically inclined, nothing is left. Ok I exaggerate but this “struggle” is real. 😆
