Hello, we're hoping there'll be existing or past Crescentians or parents' of either here, who can enlighten us on what does CGS's CCA: Digital Art & Manga club activities are the girls engaged in ??

Our P6 2021 graduated child is excited ,upon spotting this unique CCA, & wishes to put CGS in either 1st or 2nd school choices. This is because she likes drawing but hers are leaning towards Japanese cartoon ones (somewhere between chibis & manga) & not the traditional art styles. When we were shortlisting schools from MOE's issued \"Choosing Your Secondary Schools\" booklet, CGS only indicated Digital Art club, no mentioning of Manga club. So we are confused & puzzled, why CGS\"s school website CCA page included the latter. My girl is worried that Digital Art club (without Manga) is in fact similar to most other schools' art clubs, where traditional art specialisation skills/techniques are typically valued.
Secondly does this club requires Sec1 students to undergo audition/trials ?? Are all applicants to its Digital Art & Manga club, who put it as 1st CCA choice, granted this CCA ?? Or most of its members are typically assigned to, due to their unsuccessful allocation to the more popular ones ??
        :thankyou: for any valuable feedbacks.

Unlikely will fluctuate much due to the number of classes allocated for sec 1

About the audition thing I'm not very sure but i dont think there is”

              Just for sharing.

My daughter shared that during her CCA session she reached home at 7.45pm.

By the time settled down after dinner and bathing, she will do her homework and goes to bed latest by 11pm. She will continue to catch up another one hour of resting time in the morning as I sent her to school.

We set the light off timing at 11pm and has scheduled the wifi to disable at 11pm.

Beside the school hours , she has tuition on weekday, weekend and church activities.

She used whether remaining time she has to catch up on preparation of tests and examination.

As we are very tired after a long day of work therefore let her planed her studying time.

My younger girl is eligible to goes CGS and after weighing the pro and con of few schools option based on CCA and traveling time is leading toward putting CGS as first choice.

Should she choose CGS , she can use her sister school books and this help us save some money.

About the audition thing I'm not very sure but i dont think there is”

This is shared by my daughter’s friend who is in the digital art and photography club

“For the first question; the CCA used to be manga club only, but later on merged with the photography club to become “Digital art and photography club”. The manga part was removed and the art that is done during CCA is no longer only focused on manga nor only on digital art, but actually all types of art in general (e.g painting, designing, rubber carving, colour pencil art) every year the activities are different and organised by the Teachers (external instructors are hired) but the focus may not be on manga; however one can draw manga as their main art style and submit manga characters for national competitions or school based projects even if it is not taught. However there is also the photography element which is viewed with equal importance as the art aspect of the CCA. External instructors are brought in to teach the in-depth use of DSLR cameras and one would be assigned to be photographers at various school events. So 1 day a week is for art and 1 day for photography lessons in the CCA. From my experience, I know so many friends who still draw mostly manga as the merger happened only a few years ago, and all CCA members are encouraged to have their own art style even if the art lessons are not related to it (which they can use for submissions or even lessons too) During lessons, we mostly have the freedom to paint or draw whatever we wish to so long it is related to the skill we are taught or the theme; so if we use colour pencils you can draw manga with it; even with the paints or oil pastels etc. or if we have to draw people you can draw in manga style:

There is the need to submit a portfolio of artworks and photos taken which will be used to shortlist the members (places are quite limited) and if I remember correctly there is now a need for an interview but I think it is just a group interview to get to know the profile of the students better. It is difficult to get in and you must have some (very little) prior skill (don’t need to be exceptional) but a lot interest in the CCA. But 1 thing is that the CCA is one of the most accepting to transfer ins as it is a club/might be considered performing art(so if you swap CCA during any of your first 3 years in school they accept quite easily so long you have the passion and interest)

I’m pretty sure most who submit a portfolio, attend the interview etc will get it if it is their first choice (though only 8/10-15 spots are available in Sec 1) I do have a friend who submitted her portfolio but did not get in so might be a bit hard to get in if you show that you have interest in other areas e.g putting UGs/performing arts CCAs or unpopular CCA options in one of your choices“

                    Hi Taxi-Driver,

We're grateful for all your above sharing, especially the last :goodpost: . Its 1st paragraph has indeed given my gal the insight of CGS's Digital Art Club. What were described, by your daughter's friend, has made her even more excited since photography has recently sparked her curiosity & interest. Now she is adamantly putting CGS as her 1st choice, although she just meet its indicative cut-off point. Hence we're keeping our fingers crossed, hoping for her dream comes true. Likewise we wish the same for your younger daughter.
The 2nd & last paragraphs are very helpful, allowing those who have same interest level in the club to know what can be expected during CGS's Sec 1 CCA selection exercise. On the last inferred statement of the student who was unsuccessful to be selected to the club, does it mean if one is determined to join it, they probably should just indicate 1 CCA choice? Does CGS has rules/expectation on Sec 1 students to indicate at least 3 choices ? Or perhaps (like some secondary schools) that their choices need to be at least 1 from each CCA category, eg Sports, UGs, Visual/Perfoming Arts & Clubs/Societies?
                    :imsorry: for more questions here.
We :welcome: other students (graduated/existing) & parents' feedbacks too.

                    :thankyou:

Please note that CGS is using iPad as personal learning devise and understand that the school assists to download software and application for learning purpose.

The school will also set certain restriction on the iPad that disallow accessing to restricted internet website.

There will be Handphone locker for all students to lock up the device during school lesson hence for emergency purpose do call the school office.
