Hello parents! Team Essilor is here to share more information about Myopia in children. The most common question we get on treating Myopia is... ‘Can LASIK surgery fix Myopia?’ 👀
A lot of parents are hoping that lasik surgery or refractive surgery can cure their child’s myopia. This is unfortunately not the case.
Myth: Lasik Surgery Can Fix Myopia
Refractive surgery corrects myopia by changing the curvature of the cornea, but it does nothing to slow down the progression of myopia.
Why is refractive surgery not enough against myopia?
Lasik surgery is not a cure for myopia, it is merely a treatment to correct refractive area.. It neither reverses the already elongated eyeball, nor reduces the risk of ocular complications.
When is the right time for surgery?
Refractive surgery can only be considered when myopia is fully stabilised. This is contraindicated for progressive myopia.
Why is it important to control myopia as early as possible?
For juvenile myopia, if we have early intervention to control the progression of it, not only can we reduce the risk of ocular complications, but also accelerate the age of myopia stabilization, making more myopic patients better candidate for refractive surgery.
Lasik or refractive surgery is correcting but is not reversing myopia. Surgery doesn’t reduce the risk of further ocular complications there are some things we can consider at early stage, including novel spectacle lenses that can slow down the progression of myopia very effectively. Hello parents! Did you know that Myopia is caused by eye condition whereby eyeball is too long? This causes light rays to focus at a point in front of the retina, rather than directly on its surface. This results in blurry vision.
Myopia is a medical term used to describe short-sightedness, also referred to as nearsightedness. People with Myopia find that objects or people at a distance look a bit blurry, but as soon as they get closer, they appear clearer.
Myopia typically begins in childhood and may progress with age . The younger a child develops myopia, the faster it progresses and they are at a greater risk of developing high myopia. Now, with Stellest
Lenses and its game changing H.A.L.T. Technology, it’s possible to slow down myopia progression by 67% on average*, compared to single vision lenses, when worn 12 hours a day. Stellest
Lenses give sharp vision, are aesthetic, safe and simple.

Hello parents! Team Essilor is here to share more information about Myopia in children. Today’s topic we’ll be discussing about is.... “Should we be concerned about Myopia if it’s been corrected?” 👀
The answer is we need to proactively control Myopia at the earliest stage.
Myth: No need to worry about Myopia as long as it is corrected.
Even though ocular complications related to Myopia does not happen to every myope, the risk of that does increase exponentially with the severity of Myopia.
Is it important to act now as my child is very young?
Given that the average age of onset Myopia has become much younger, the overall severity of Myopia in this generation has also become much worse. The chances of your child developing Myopia related complications will be much higher compared to an adult.
I’m myopic and I live very well. Aren’t corrective lenses enough for my child?
Simply correcting Myopia with correction lenses is not enough. We need to proactively control Myopia at the earliest stage.
Are there effective solutions to fight against Myopia at a younger age?
Fortunately, there are many evidence-based options including novel spectacle lenses, which can drastically reduce ocular complications.
In summary, here are things we should keep in mind:
1. New generations are affected by Myopia at a younger age.
2. They are more at risk of developing complications than you are.
3. Correcting Myopia is not enough; it must be controlled.
4. There are solutions to effectively slow down its progression.
What are your experiences with Myopia? Share about it with us, or ask us anything you’d like to know!

I’ve 3 children 7-14 years old. Currently, they’re not short-sighted, but they’re spending an average of 5 hours on the computer during the school holidays. Are there lenses that they can wear to reduce damage to their eyesight?

My 11 year old has max 3 hours of screen time daily during these hols, and they are all spaced out in separate hourly blocks. There is another 3 hours of leisure time that is non-screen. He can read or draw or just chill during such non-screen time. Not short-sighted either. I wouldnt want him to wear any lenses at all if I could.

There are glasses that can reduce blue light exposure. You can try buying them and letting them wear. The optical shops would normally recommend it after you make the prescripted lenses.
