My girl got invited today but we are not sure if she will succeed in the program . We didn’t go for GEP training but she has been on Learning Lab for a while for regular classes . Not sure if it artificially boosted the results but she reads a lot and writes good compositions - used as model compo to be shared .

Hello parents! Newbie here. Anyone staying in the East (Tampines) and got their child to go to Tao Nan GEP? How do you find the distance? Do they have school bus to Tampines?


Also, is this even a possibility? Will our child be automatically assigned to St Hilda’s if we stay at Tampines?

Congrats! My girl went in without any prior training at home or tuition center. But She read a lot and enjoy problem solving since young. She always has been doing well academically. And lucky for her she continue to do well at GEP.
Have faith in her. I believe she will do well.

I suppose it will not be any issue to give GEP a try since she is invited. And see how the additional exposures can improve her. Maybe also check, if for some reason things doesn’t work out in GEP for her, any withdrawal option?

I think it will only be an issue, if we force it through: when things didn’t work out and we still cannot let go, clinch on to it. Thinking we must always succeed in everything or first time in what we do.

Just to share what I went through 3 years ago when we received the letter from school. The same thoughts that some had here also went through our heads: Will he enjoy the programme? Will the syllabus differ much that he can’t do well in PSLE? Have to change school, will he adjust well? Etc.

With these uncertainties, we attended the briefing at NUS High. Questions were answered, uncertainties cleared. We decided that the programme will benefit DS, so we took the leap of faith. And it turned out to be a great choice. DS learnt so much from his Teachers and friends. Not only on academic aspect, he also learnt a lot about teamwork.

He is always very outspoken in his previous primary school, giving lots of ideas, and his ex-classmates usually let him lead. But when he was placed into a class, many who are also very out-spoken and smart, he had to learn to take a step back and let others lead as well. There are many group projects, so they learnt how to work with others and listen to each other’s opinions too.

Syllabus wise, please don’t worry. Definitely same for science. For Math they seem to be doing more advanced questions, questions that I don’t even understand. :scratchhead: HCL/CL same textbooks. EL - there are many projects, individuals or group. Very good exposure and the Teachers are amazing. They need to read a lot to expand their vocabulary.

At P6, schools will start to give them PSLE revision booklets at T2 or T3 (forgot exactly when) to work on. They will be ready for PSLE when the time comes.

Overall DS benefitted from the programme and it helped him to enjoy school. I don’t hear anymore complaints from teachers (ex school) that he is always reading when they were teaching. But expectations have to be adjusted, not everyone will continue to top the class. No more Edusave awards for the past 3 years :imcool: , as there are so many outstanding and smart kids in the class too.

Remember to be there for them and constantly check on how they are doing and feeling. At 9-10 year old, it’s a big transition especially going to new school with new classmates and many are so smart or much smarter.

But it was a good journey that if we get to choose again, we will say yes. However, after going through the programme and watching the amount of work and discipline needed, I am very sure my younger child will not be suitable for it. And true enough, DD was not selected after going through the tests. She is doing well in mainstream and more of a sportsperson. Each child is different and we as parents need to recognise that. The programme is to help children with ‘different’ needs to enjoy studying even more.

Attend the briefing and for those who decides to take up the offer, enjoy the journey with your DS/DD. Not easy but definitely a fulfilling one.

TLL Eng regular classes are not the same as those Gep prep class. Gep prep classes drill children with General Ability questions.

By attending TLL Eng can perhaps help improve the child’s English standard and let the child cross round 1 but as round 2 tests different aspects, attending TLL Eng may not help.

You must have faith and confidence in your daughter. Her compo has been chosen as a model compo meaning she her Eng standard is indeed better than her peers

Our son, unfortunately doesn't like to read. We were actually surprised on how he passed the GEP test last year, especially the English test. My guess is MOE must have chosen students who are strong in either Math, or English, or both.

Congratulations for all the P3ers regardless of the test result. They are all superstars !

I used to scour the internet / blogs/ forums for such reading list and systematically (not quite la, maybe during sale only) pass 1-2 books to my kids every other month.

My kid loves Harry Potter and has read it many many times (Speed reading) Any suggestions on other similar series that would be a good read?

Usually I just go to the library and borrow books from young adults that are featured on the shelves, especially best-sellers 😂 (except anything romantic) Same book for my p6 and p3. Most time I let my p6 read first to “censor” where necessary

I used to read books again and again too... but that was until I discovered there was something known as \"computers\". I think if you can keep his interest in books, that is great. But I'm not sure how you can \"censor\" him from smartphones, computers, etc.

Mine both girls. So far, their use of tech is quite regulated. “Censoring” of books is on anything sensual/romantic for now. What I borrow for them is really random cos I never read the books myself (risky… 😅) if they like the book then I borrow more from same author. i ran out of luck as last few books have not been as interesting. The authors which they like are not on the Angga888 list at all except for the classics (first few on the list). my P3 still loves Harry Porter so I’m looking out for next best options for her
