Best to refer to the NUS website as there is a huge range of room types and hostel types. For halls and colleges, please remember to factor in the meal plans.
How much does it cost to stay inside NUS or NTU hostel nowadays ?
Do they charge hostel fees, by per Term or per Year basis ?
https://nus.edu.sg/osa/student-services/hostel-admission/undergraduate/hostel-meal-plan-rates
It's best to check with NUS but I am pretty sure the hostel fees are charged per semester basis (and not per yeear) because NUS has students on exchange programmes, both inbound and outbound, every semester. -

Ask your kids what kind of jobs he/she want to do after study?
Hi
My kids are fast approaching the end of the sec/jc journey and they are clueless about what uni courses to take (am sure there are many teenagers like this too). For ksp parents here who are very experienced and been through the same path, do you mind sharing the uni courses/which uni your kids have pursued and the thoughts process behind them. Appreciate kind sharing from parents thank you.
One of my niece is good at playing piano and she went to the United Kingdom to study Music and become a professional piano teacher now. My three nephew, one was studying accounting and is now working in Price Waterhouse and one is still studying architecture and the other is an insurance agent as he studied business administration. My step son went to the SIM University for Electrical Engineering and he is working as an Electrical Engineer. -

With more flexibilities, there are more combinations, choices and hence more headache.
Tembusu College is a great college - a lot of college spirit. Kinda 'artsy' though. Did she manage to catch talks by rector Prof Tommy Koh?
Yes, she enjoyed it. There were some dogs' show whereby some special tamed dogs came with their owners to allow students to pat them
I would say, you are an enlightened parent who is willling to support your child to experience residential college life at NUS. Many Singaporean parents balk at the costs of hostel life and are not supportive of their kids experiencing it, as commuting is usually not too inconvenient for most Singaporeans.
Initially dd wanted to go overseas to study
I told her $$ not enough and she has to settle with Tembusu College.
The wonderful thing about College of Humanities and Sciences is that you now no longer need to choose between FASS and FOS - you can enter the College, and choose to combine majors / second majors / major-minor from across what FASS and FOS offers. -

Thanks. Honestly I haven't done any research. If this is so, why are there different RP cutoff for NUS PS, Econs versus the general FASS? Are the PS or Econs not in FASS but in science faculty?
Hi Imp75,
There is no limit to the number of FASS (more accurately, College of Humanities and Sciences) students who can read Economics or Political Science as their major now. Just like any other majors, you just need to pass the modules to take the next level modules etc. Any and every FASS/CHS student can opt to major in Economics. -

Just sharing for my case, school fee is 3690 (study loan) + 544.70 (cash) each sem. So for one year, the cost will be sum of these amounts times 2.

The cost of staying in Tembusu (single room, w/o air-con, inclusive of 3 meals) is about the same as the school fees ie payable by each sem.
So i hv sent \"2 kids\" to NUS  -

Am unsure if I did the right thing but anyway, there is no replay.
What you wrote about studying Science subjects so resonates with me. I didn't insist, but I did tell my kids it would be useful to take triple science in upper sec so that you know which sciences to pick for JC. They both did. And now, none is keen to study Science in JC wahahahahahahah!
I insisted dd to do Science subjects all the way till her JC. She struggled with maths, chem and physics.
Both dh and I were from Science. Our genes didnt pass to her  -

The IGP table can be found in the link above. Refer to the College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) portion - CHS is a combination of both FASS and FOS.
To do any major within CHS (this includes Economics and Political Science, as well as Mathematics etc), you will have to qualify under Humanities and Sciences. This gives you the full range of options of all majors offered by CHS, excluding the other specific programmes listed.
All the other programmes listed, i.e. Data Science and Economics, Pharmacy, Philosophy, Politics and Economics - these are specific programmes with pre-determined set of majors and these require different entry requirement grades. -

She is taking Communications and New Media.
Thanks star!
FASS which course? I think most FASS courses have no specialisations except in econs and political sci on year 1 right? Which means someone can actually do badly in year 1 and end up in a less than desirable fass specialisation in year 2 onwards?
I never heard of this when she applied for it. I was quite doubtful she would do well in this ??? course but she did.
The only regret is she didnt get to go overseas to study for a sem. She has been eyeing for this overseas trip which I agreed but due to covid, she has to stayput. -

I know it is an overgeneralisation here but my sense is that the NUS kids who stayed in Residential Colleges and/or halls are those who found university life most enriching and memorable. Those who didn't - I guess university life was somewhat like school?

The Residential Colleges as well as academic departments at NUS offer students one ton of opportunities to go on student exchange programmes at overseas universities as well. -

CNM is one of the most popular majors at FASS. Not a typical path for a science stream student but really there are no boundaries to learning.

there are a lot of science stream kids who opt for Econs or Geog (there is a huge quantitative and economic aspect of geog as well, in demography, or even in geographical info systems etc) Traditionally, those who know right from the outset that they want to do Comms in uni, some would opt for the course offered by NTU.
