Life beyond 80s is rather scary. Unless one still have a lot of energy in them, and still surrounded by their loved ones, there is so little to live for.

Worse would be when you go to the doc and they tell you that your this and that organ is working only at xx%, or you have a major health issue but too old to be operated upon. You know you are going but have no idea when...just waiting....
We need to eat and live healthier, to keep ourselves in a condition that can live beyond 70s.. it is quite common for women to outlive their husbands..

I imagine when I’m in my 70s, I’ll have a few close friends and cute little grandkids to play with.. that will be meaningful retirement for me.

I see my relatives. Not much energy in their 70s. Told hubby we should travel more while we can.
Yes I too, think that traveling requires a significant amount of energy. Gotta do them once or twice a year.. to keep the momentum up! When older can travel closer.

My MIL passed away in her 90s. She had dementia then. Couldn’t remember where I heard this, don’t anyhow “wish” someone 祝你福如东海、寿比南山. 😂

Why need to think too much in such a negative way as you may be the healthier one living happily with your grandsons and granddaughters? There is always so many things to live for. For me, I have many good friends and I don't want to leave them and go......
No lah, I don't normally think about it so negatively.
But when friends and colleagues shared about their parents, I just wondered what it would be like to be in their shoes.
I was attached to a hospice for a short while when younger. My friend and I always wondered what was on their mind when we see them staring blankly into the air.

Growing old means having some illness which will need medicine regularly

This expense is hard to predict

I am into 'can die but can't fall sick'
I bought a hospital plan “Ward A as charged”. I didn’t buy riders. First few Ks I still can afford. It’s the unknown size of the final bill that I am worried (can be a bomb) which I do not wish to burden my children with.

Heard of a story of a retiree who slipped and fell after a swim to hit the metal bar then went into coma, hospital bill came up to a few hundred Ks. This is something I don’t wish to burden my kids. DH said should he go into coma, don’t bother rescuing him, just let go.

Worry and do nothing about it, is an option but won’t be fair to your surviving family members. So I over worry and do something about it by getting hospital coverage

I agree with your husband. I was planning to get LPA and AMD done recently, then one thing after another kept cropping up. Must put it on my to-do list to get them done soon!

I can't afford high medical insurance, and have told my kids to put me in C class, or better still, just hospice care. I'd rather go sooner than try so hard to stay alive.

I’ve learnt fr my SIL, with almost entire family of doctors (pediatricians, obstetrician, dentist & ophthalmologist) just won’t buy any ‘high’ plans as they will plan their parents’ hospitalization needs according to admission needs. When their father was struggling with lung cancers & getting in/out hospitals in his late years, they’ll check him into C/B wards. But when there’s a need for any other non-longterm stays, they’ll admit any family members into B/A wards.

Understandably, I rmbr the many visits to comfort & cheer elderly uncle & aunty and can’t imagine if long term stay on high costs of daily charges of A wards and the respective higher consultation charges load on the family. That was the era when the elderlies hv no health insurance.

I cover myself & family health insurance (with PA for kids when young), but realized that many of the old plans with riders are term policies. Today, most health policies, even those with riders, “do not pay in full” as there’s a co-payment element besides the deductible. So, this drives us to select our ward class & consultants carefully.

Both DH & I just did our LPA with our family doc to authorize each other access to our properties, funds and manage our healthcare decisions. When MIL heard that, she wanted us to help her get her LPA done ASAP. I’ve alr given instructions if I’m seriously ill, just let me recover or go without struggle for long term life support. My hope & treasures are not earthly, as I look fwd to an everlasting life in heaven with my loved ones.

My grandmother's experience: first her husband died, then her remaining friends died, and she was the last one left in her generation. Her grandkids grew up, and she forgot who they were (because of dementia). She had several great-grandkids by the time she died, but she never knew that they were hers.

Start playing Sudoku or Mahjong today! Dementia is terrible, I see it in my mum.
MRI shows her brain is shrinking so she is slowly forgetting us.

Let me guess...think slmkhoo will take better to Wordle or Quordle! Lol 🙂 These are great to keep dementia at bay too.
