Hi all… any tips on how to revise Chinese regularly? Like what should we cover? He doesn’t have issues reading, recognizing the word and meaning but more on applying the right words in the right context. Those questions where the meanings are similar, I believe it’s the last few qns in the MCQ. And also comprehension.

I’m not sure why he is inconsistent in chinese. Last year he managed to do well, but CA1 his chinese fell my 2 ALs.

Just to add my chinese is at best P3 level, as I didn’t take the subject in primary. So I have limited abilities to help him but I would like to try. Sometimes when I translate the words, I myself not sure what’s the difference in the options.

Interesting change for Oral days. For the past years, it has always been on Thur & Fri (either National Day week or the week after).

Yes interesting. Prior to today’s update, they had amended their tentative timetable (last week?) from Thurs & Fri…to Monday & Tuesday.

DS will be having Prelims LC and written papers immediately after, from Wed to the next Tues. Guess he’ll be sufficiently “warm” and definitely happy to be over with it all in one shot!

                  Hi mystique_j ,

For the issue you mentioned (in blue above), this can be solved with more practice on 实用文 component - i.e. paper 2 booklet a section 1.

With more practice, your child will learn

                  - how the phrases can be used in different context (e.g. 特别 can mean specially or especially) and the different 词语搭配 options that are applicable (e.g. other than the more common 克服困难,there's also克服挑战、克服恐惧 ),
                  - how the Chinese character can match with another one to form a phrase that is different from what they saw in the textbook
(e.g. in the textbook they learnt the word \"共\" and the phrase that appeared in the passage is ”共用. however, they can be tested in a question where phrase is _______同 ---> where the answer should be 共同 ).

You can check out this book for practicing purposes:

As for other components, this was what https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=84699&p=1874232&hilit=chenlaoshi#p1874212:

                  For CL:
                  Paper 1 Compo
                  - Prioritize on recap of the adjectives and descriptive phrases (minimal 1 for each type) that can be used for feelings (happy, angry, panic/scared, embarrassed, tired, scared) and common actions (walking happily, walking hastily, running, scolding, apologizing). If time permits, then weather and appearance too.
                  - If the child has memorized any opening and/or closing paragraphs, get them to practice writing them out without any 错别字 (very wasteful to have marks deducted for these kind of 'fixed' content which they should have been very used to and familiar with)

                  Paper 2 Written Paper
                  - Make use of the bilingual list at the back of P6 and P5 textbooks for revision. Child can do self directed learning by covering the column with English translation/meaning. Circle or ticked out those that he/she didn't know the meaning of. That will help sieve out the ones which require more attention. Prior to the paper on Mon (i.e. over the weekend, focus on those 'sieved out' words/phrases.
                  - Practice on 短文填空,阅读理解(一),完成对话 and 阅读理解(二)A组. These sections are all MCQ (+1 note writing question) thus do not take up that much time. They are also very much 'score-able' and there's every possibility that a child can score close to full marks out of the 38 available (10+8+10+10). If the P6 past yr school exam papers have already been completed, turn to the P5 papers instead. Certain words/phrases are commonly repeated in the 阅读理解(二)A组 section - e.g. 截止日期、详情、首50名、获得礼包etc. so the child will get familiarized and know where to check for information. Meanwhile, reading and understanding the passages in 短文填空,阅读理解(一)can indirectly prepare them for 阅读理解(二)B组.

Speaking of 克服困难 (also克服挑战、克服恐惧 ), for DS’ recent CA, he was thrown off by an unusual “split” phrasing (perhaps a little unusual matching too):

Wah, that can be quite taxing. Wonder if the school might make slight tweak to the schedule. Oh the other hand, it's a good \"training\" experience. :nunchuk:
