I guess, we could prioritize Singaporeans over foreigners. Which is what we are seeing in our local schools admission.
So tell me, if you were a policymaker, how would you think to stop the \"people not having kids\" phenomenon?
You could say, nevermind, as long as my kid reaches RI/HCI, doesnt matter. But lots of RI/HCI alumni are just average salary men in MNCs. They rarely get to be the bosses, who are always Americans, Indians, Chinese, Europeans - bigger markets, superpowers. And when retrenchment comes? It isn't Singaporeans who make decisions. Why? Demographics is destiny. There are going to be hardly any Singaporeans! -

You may well be right but looking at the senior leadership (Perm Sec/DS/Director etc)
Things have changed in recent years, as compared to the time you were there. In many public sectors, we are seeing “farmers” being promoted and some of the top positions were taken up by non scholars. The scholars no longer get promoted faster if they are not capable. In fact, I know a few scholars who are thinking of leaving to join the private sector, as the pastures seem greener there where people still value their “scholar” status. There are also scholars who made “blunders” ..
of the Civil Service, all are scholars. Is it a matter of setting aside crumbs at lower strata of leadership to satisfy the farmers aka non-scholars? -

Are all the senior leadership of the Civil Service scholars? I am not aware that in my company. :?

It really depends on where you look and how you want to see it. I see many who are non-scholars,.. and they are not at the lower tier at all. There are of course positions that requires more domain expertise where we would like to have scholars on it.

Yes, when there’s a AL tie, Singaporeans get in first. Singaporeans also pay subsidized fees.

Haha.. horrifying.. (?) -

Scholars are given more opportunities to showcase themselves and not surprised that they will be promoted faster. Company has also invested in their education and so will need to prove that their investment is worth it.

If my child has the opportunity to get a scholarship, will encourage her to go for it.
Read somewhere that 40 percent of the cohort can enter the local Uni. Hope my child is one of them. Non graduate starting pay is so much lower. -

Depends on how one define pillars of society.
If only if one day...as you stated \"Singaporeans become minority\", then I think we have to look into the problem why we are (技不如人) skill level not good as others. However, I still believe my step son, my nephew and nieces and their DS and DD in future will be well educated and become the pillars of Singapore.
Some time ago, our govt pushed for more young people to join the Poly Diploma course to become hawkers. This is something I do not wish to see as Singapore progresses. I hope our grandchildren don’t need to become Grab driver or a hawker to serve FTs after they graduate. -

There is a good reason to cap the percentage of graduates in each cohort.
Is that right? Only 40% make it into all 6 local Unis - NUS, NTU, SuSS, SUTD, SMU and SIT? There seems to be a lot of Unis available.
Or we could be like Taiwan and allow everybody to graduate with a degree. The supply of graduates will far outweigh the number of quality jobs. End up pay is low, jobs are hard to come by and under-employment becomes a problem.
