Is that right? Only 40% make it into all 6 local Unis - NUS, NTU, SuSS, SUTD, SMU and SIT? There seems to be a lot of Unis available.
40% is very high already. For comparison, it's 39% in UK and 37% in US. In the past, like 20-30 years ago, it was maybe 20% in Singapore.

There are 2 things to consider: the bell curve and the jobs available.

The bell curve doesn't change over the generations - if more people get degrees, it doesn't mean that the population is overall more intelligent; it may simply mean that more degree courses are not as challenging as in the past.

The no. of \"graduate\" jobs won't necessarily increase to absorb all the graduates. What will happen is that more jobs will be held by graduates, but the range of salaries that graduates earn will simply vary even more. Already, admin jobs are now held by diploma and degree holders when, 30 yrs ago, they would have been held by O and A level holders.

More importantly, I think we need to narrow the pay gap between graduates and non-graduates, and increase the respect we have for \"non-graduate\" jobs and those who do them. Yes, it will make many more things more expensive like home help, eating out, etc. But it will make our society fairer and less unequal.

Lawrence Wong is from Tanjong Katong Secondary School and VJC. He is the frontrunner to be PM, compared to OYK and CCS, who are Rafflesians and scholars.

Minister of State Alvin Tan repeated JC1 and scored Cs and Ds for his A levels. He worked and succeeded in Goldman Sachs, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Profile of civil service has changed somewhat.
Lawrence Wong? He’s a PSC Overseas scholar.

Alvin Tan? He’s also a recipient of the SAF local study award/scholarship.

I am not saying non scholar means cannot promote lah. Even Poly graduate can be awarded PSC. 1 in 100 maybe.

So how to get scholarships? Good academic results + good CCA record + good NS record (for guys). So, solely based on high EQ is not enough. I don’t believe results not important (although not the only criteria to success). Even to get into popular courses in Ngee Ann Poly / Singapore Poly, the competition is cut-throat and COP extremely low.

Hi Friend, then who will be the Taxi Drivers and Hawkers in future Singapore? All services can go automation :?
or allow foreigners to come in and work as Taxi Drivers and Hawkers?[/quote]
Do you know that foreigners are not allowed to be taxi drivers in Singapore? If we allow foreigners to be taxi drivers, then those lowly educated Singaporeans cannot drive taxi to earn a living.

Do you know there is this Automatic Fried Rice Machine that even children can make their own fried rice? Heard from friend, who bought the equipment for her kids to ‘cook’ meals themselves, the fried rice turns out to be delicious and the process simple.

We dont have the Western Scandinavian or American culture, where society lets their kids grow up run wild make mistakes on their own merits, without pouring your retirement money into \"tuition\". Big cars and houses are still viewed with envy, both by rich and poor. So those who value materialism, would rather not have children, so they can save money on \"tuition\" and have big cars and houses instead. While those who didnt like schooling here, definitely dont want children.
Well, either the cultuer adapts to reality (and universities for Singaporeans didn't actually start till my parents were in sec school - what happened before that?) or if, say, 80% of each chort are graduates, then graduates will be hawkers and road sweepers in future (unless we still import those) or there will be high graduate unemployment.

Rather than assume that materialism is a given and can't be changed, we need to do something about it, starting with ourselves and our children.

Latest rumour has it that https://theindependent.co/is-chan-chun-sing-leading-the-race-to-be-the-next-prime-minister-of-singapore/ based on sources from PAP insiders.

So maybe Lawrence Wong is handicapped in the race to be PM by his less than pure pedigree?

Tsk, this alternative media cannot rely on the no. of shares to determine who's the Chosen One. Posts by Sun XueLing, the former TH director, are also frequently shared by her.

If you look at the posts by LW in recent months, he seems to have assumed he's the heir-apparent already. He's been posting on every other minister's business and policies, including this thread's Subject, i.e. the removal of MYE, that wasn't even introduced by him. 😂

CCS the Cambridge and President's Scholar, and many other Rafflesians must first of all be comfortable with LW and acknowledge him as their future performance appraiser. LW would be sitting at the head of the table asking Shan, VB, HSK, CCS, OYK, etc. to advise him on internal and foreign affairs. He would have to go around the table and ask them for views on things like say, the future China Civil War & SCS Conflict.

In Chinese, we say “服” someone。 To be first among equals, the others must first and foremost “服你”, i.e. they all think you are the wisest, smartest and most popular of them all, despite your age and credentials. Once they ”输得心服口服“, then they will ”服从你的命令“。 Those who don't feel comfortable having their future performance appraised (i.e. their million-dollar wages and annual increment will be affected) by this dude will either resign or retreat as backbencher.

Don’t understand how doing away with mid year exams will reduce stress when still need to take PSLE.

The competition today is different from our times. During our times, most parents are not educated and most don’t have tuition. No competition from other nationalities. My girl is in a neighbourhood school. Last year, two out of the four who got into GEP were with parents from other nationalities.

As parents, we want to help our children maximise their potentials. Reducing the mid year exams reduce one checkpoint. It is not helpful at all.

If educated people don't want children due to materialism and poorly educated people definitely don't want children due to stress, then the Singaporean child is an endangered species.

In Germany or Australia the plumber or the crane operator are paid as well as middle managers.
I suppose we are coloured by who we see the most. In my social circle, most of the young married couples are busily having kids - at least 1-2 per couple. Those that don't have are the ones who are having difficulties conceiving. In my church group of 8 couples in their 30s, all university graduates, (a couple of them with higher degrees), we have 5 kids aged 3 and under, 1 on the way, and 2 more couples working on it. This may not be a representative sample across Singapore, but it does give some hope.

I hope Singapore can eventually work towards paying good wages for non-academic skills too, even if it means that we have to pay more for services.

Maybe you can check with your kids' school if there would be several checkpoints instead of that one checkpoint. Many schools have already started this mini tests approach prior to the mid year exams announcement. The teachers also have to watch their performance as teachers, so it is unlikely that there would be no checkpoint for the teachers to understand how the kids are doing.

It can reduce stress if the topics are tested in bite size rather than in one mid year exam and perhaps the kids can remember the topics better in this way instead of being tested later at mid year.
