Mid-year exams to be scrapped in all primary, secondary schools by 2023

Hi parents, this I found, could be the new assessments format:


– 8 timed essays, once a month, 5% weighting each. (40% total)
– March, Oral presentation (10%)
– May, Listening Comprehension (5%)
– July, Group Project (20%)
– September, Listening Comprehension (5%)
– End of Year Exam (20%)

If this is the case, it should be less high stake than the current mid/end year exam format?

Cos as far as I know, in most primary schools it is currently still EOY having 60-70% weightage. For those levels where MYE has been removed.

I don’t have any kids in the primary school system so I m not sure what are the new changes there now. Yesterday a friend (who’s a FTWM) briefly shared that her son did decently well for those mini tests in school for Chinese and there was no major exams for him. So when he took his first P3 EOY Chinese exam, he came home with 34/100. Sent the mum into freak out mode so the boy was sent to tuition.
I am not sure if this is normal for Pri kids or my friend’s son is the exception.

My kid just scored 44% in the school’s recent Math WA.
In the same week that the kid was invited to the Math and Science Olympiad.
Go figure.

Ah I see…it seems to be a postulated scenario for Sec 3 English subject (hence the timed essays). It’s not mentioned if any schools actually have used it yet.

Nah. Lots of careless and mindless mistakes. Generally lack focus.
TBH. Was quite happy that the kid fail.

When I read this article, this concept of new assessment model, coming from an ex teacher, may provide some indications of how schools may approach assessment in general after scrapping MYE. Probably wait to hear, if it’s indeed the case in 2023. If true then less worries for parents.

Yes since my girls time. I recalled they score full marks for mini tests like vocab and typical paper 2 questions but when EOY came, their results drop below 85 at P3 due mainly to pass in oral and compo only. I panicked and send them to small group chinese tuition under the tutelage of a PRC tutor in P4 as I realised I have been a lousy chinese tchr to them.

You saw 85% already panicked and sent your kid to tuition, then how should my friend feel with 34/100? 😂

According to my friend, she felt that mini tests questions were easier and less in deep than EOY questions. Plus she described her son as one who will “return” everything to the teacher immediately after the test type. 😂

I feel that having mid year exam has its pros that is, students can revise what they have learnt for 1st half of the year.

Yah language is not something that can be taught in-house esp if the parents are not good either. So the below 85 at P3 seems like a wake-up call to outsource to professional sooner than later. In the end, I seemed to have recouped my investment costs as the cost of tuition was lower than the ESIS award for 6y hahahaha.....
