After reading most of the posts on learning Chinese Language, I found that Chen Lao Shi has given lot of information on the requirements and the answering technique on how to get good scores on Exam. Thank you Chen Lao Shi. 谢谢。
Besides learning Chinese to sit for the exam, are kids really love the language? Maybe I just share some practices in my DH family on learning Chinese Language. My FIL could not understand English and we had to speak Mandarin to him.
Because of his age, his eyes couldn’t read newspapers, my two nephews had to read out some of the local the news from Lianhe Zaobao to my FIL every morning. During dinner time at 0630pm, my FIL switched on TV for the news on Channel 8 and due to his deaf ears, the volume was high and all family members could hear the news from Channel 8. Finally all my nephews had no problem in oral, tingxie, etc. even no tuition was given to them. -

LNW, your sharing reminded me of this video (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1882776788407295) I shared with my students previously, esp. when discussing about the learning of MT as a language.

I commented about how we can see some grandparents learning/speaking in their \"limited\" English so as to communicate with their grandchildren - wouldn't it be nice if it's the young ones who take the initiative instead? Deviating slightly away from the topic, it's also a little saddening that many kids have lost the opportunities to learn dialect from the elderlies at home, because the main/only language they converse in seem to be English. When I was covering the phrase 方言, some students don't even know their dialect group... :sad: -

- introduce classical/historical materials such as Records of the Grand Historian 《史记》 and Chinese literature works such as Classic of Mountains and Seas《山海经》、The Art of War《孙子兵法》、The Analects《论语》to them (read the 白话文 version instead of 文言文 ones for ease of understanding)

Regarding interest, sometimes you need a spark/trigger so by introducing the children to a variety of sources, we can help them find that faster/easier.
If kid is not interested in all the above, what other topics in Chinese are there?
Many kids are not rejecting Chinese, but the materials available are limited.
For example, I was never interested in Chinese history or warfare stuff but I caught an episode of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 三国演义 when I was in lower Sec, which happened to be showing Zhuge Liang's 草船借箭. I got interested in the tactics and stratagems involved, continued following the drama and subsequently read the English comic of the classic (easier to understand at that stage, as well as to know about the different characters since there are so many names throughout the story), followed by the Chinese comic and then the full Chinese version of 三国演义. In a way, it’s a bit of 误打误撞 - if I hadn’t caught that episode that Sat afternoon after CCA, my interest in 古典文学 wouldn’t have grown.
I think myths & legends, fables, cultural and tradition related stories/content are something good to start with in terms of cultivating interest and/or finding \"connection\" (after all, it's the \"roots\" for those whose MT is Chinese). For example, with the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival, we can share with children stories relating to the festival and rice dumpling’s origin etc.
Doing it naturally and leisurely helps too, imo - i.e. not doing it (or letting the child think you're doing it just) with the pure intention of wanting them to learn Chinese. Just a chit-chat topic per se.
It can be really random - like when eating 油条, introduce them to it’s origin and related ppl like 岳飞、秦桧. Speaking of which, origins of idioms 成语故事are useful too. For example, as I covered 对症下药, I introduced to students to 华佗 and for 大公无私, I told them about Justice Bao (whom sadly, lots of kids nowadays have never heard about
- we are lucky that back in our time we have 金超群’s 包青天 drama 
).
