All About Violin Classes and Teachers

Question: If your child hasn't learnt how to tune the violin, and neither can you, how is your child going to learn the play the right notes? Can't possibly wait until the teacher tune it during that half hour lesson? The entire week of practice would have been wasted efforts if the child has been playing it wrongly, right?
Then figure how to tune, lor. Nowadays have tuner apps for downloading too. Don't need to even buy extra tuner. -

Now I don't have to be in shock when outside and forgot to bring tuner. Usually I do have my handphone with me, so all's good! haha. -

When should start learning vibranto technique? Is it difficult to master?

When should start learning vibranto technique? Is it difficult to master?
Hi Honesty,
Vibrato is a left-hand technique. The child needs to have a sure command of basic right-hand bowing techniques before it is started on.. Think Suzuki's Twinkle Twinkle! Essentially, vibrato adds \"color\" to the sound and is meant to imitate the human voice.
As to your question, it really isn't difficult at all. Unlike the larger viola (where vibrato is obtained through elbow movement), violin vibrato comes from the wrist. Beginners can place the violin's scroll against the wall, bow, and isolate this wrist movement on each finger. You will need a teacher to show you, of course.
Past that, it simply amounts to practice. Speaking from experience here - I'm not a violin teacher, but I did play violin for much of my life after turning two!

Does anyone has good private violin female teachers to recommend as I am thinking of letting my 6yo girl to go into private lessons. She has been learning violin for about 8 months with Ballet & Music co. Thanks in advance!

Hi Des Wong, do you know where can I find a video demonstration or tutorial on the use of the elbow vibrato technique?
Thanks. -

[/quote]I doubt we can say it is all that easy. I have violin & viola player at home. Even for violin, there's at least 3 types of vibrato: wrist, arm, and finger vibrato. It's not just that for viola you use arm. Violin you do too... just different types of vibrato for different parts of song/notes/effect, etc.
Thanks for your tips!Des Wong:

Never knew there are so many kinds of vibrato. I thought you only use fingers to vibrate the strings and it cause the arm, wrist and elbow to move along, no?

A bit different technique lah. Surely your girl would know. You ask her lor. This is what my son asked his teacher some years ago, and that is what his teacher has taught him. I think the first one that my boy was taught was arm vibrato - that's on the violin. Not sure if there's more? haha. I think have \"hand vibrato\" also?

Iβll ask when sheβs back. But I remember when the teacher taught her, we only use fingers.

That's at the beginning. Now she's so much more advanced, surely she would have a much wider range for different uses/notes/songs/flavour (dunno how to describe lah!). -

Haha....my girl says finger, arm and wrist. Not sure about elbow, as she says that is only the pivot.
I took the back seat already. No longer going to lessons with her or rather she no longer taking lessons.
