I know cause my son had applied in 2019 with good academic results and BMAT but was shortlisted for interviews and not successful. Year 2019 was a very stress out due to the announcement of the pandemics. Most of the interviews were very mixed, NUS don't have FSA and SJT but just in-person interviews. NTU conducted the interviews virtually. That year 2019, NUS medicine had did some fine tuning to their selection processes. They become more liberalized and inclusive. Most top scoring students from two of the top JCs were not selected after the interviews. They were surprised by the turn of events cause students from these two top JCs were being offered most of the time for their leadership and academic performances. So many factors and criteria are in play in their choice of selection.

As quoted from MOHH official page - \"Total annual intakes into our local medical schools have risen from about 300 in 2010 to about 500 in 2018 from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore, Duke-NUS Medical School and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at the Nanyang Technological University.\" Most of us mistaken that the 500 was shared among NUS and NTU and forgot that there is another Medical School, DUKE-NUS.

Every year, 2000 students apply to NUS Medicine. About 1200 are shortlisted for the admissions assessment to fill 280 places. So, after being shortlisted, you have about a 1 in 4 chance of getting into NUS Medicine.

NTU Medicine offers about 160 places annually. On top of stellar academic results, most applicants would have impressive extracurricular achievements.

The remaining quotas of 60 goes to DUKE-NUS School of Medicine. Thus the total intake of 500 annually will be leveraged out among the three universities.

The wait-list outcome slowed was due to most students being offered were hesitance of which Medical School to go to and for guys on NS, whether to defer their service or continue to complete their NS. Most them will start to do their acceptance pretty near to their acceptance due date, thus causing the slowed down of the wait-list outcome. That's why trickle by trickle the announcement will start somewhere Mid of June and finally by Mid of July, both NUS and NTU should have exhausted their wait-list offering. If those did not get offered by Mid July, can confidently confirm no more hope and a notification will be sent by end of July.[/quote]
Hi Desmond, thank you for replying, and I completely agree with what you said, but I was talking more about the acceptance rate for YLL's waitlist haha. How did you come to know of the high acceptance rate of YLL's waitlist? Do you have any figures or anecdotes? Thank you!

NUS manage their wait-list with prudent decisions and a conservative approach. So the chance of a disappointment minimize.

Those on waitlist for NUS have a higher chance of success than those on waitlist for NTU.

          Observation from previous years.

I can empathize with all parents here for their anxiety. I am also once a kiasuparents here too. I have gone through it with my son before. Do give them all the moral support and strength they need.

My son did not get in to study medicine even after several tries. Even though this year, he has equipped and enhanced himself with good experiences, testimonials and with doctors as his referees also failed to secure an interview via ABAS.

The competition were tense and aggressive. Don't be despair after knowing our DS/DD did not manage to get offered. Both medicine schools had tried their best they could for those in waiting. We have to accept whatever outcome and move on.

Learn from Kiasuparents that lend encouragement here, how they and their children cope after failed attempts. Some can try again after taking gap year, especially those in NS as they have two more tries (e.g. between 2023 & 2024). During these times in army, serve the army and put efforts to train well to your best abilities. Through army's credentials, leadership performance and vocational training, you can then use it to apply into the medicine schools again.

Don't just apply for NUS, also apply NTU as well (note: take your BMAT exams). You will stand a better chance for 2nd timer application. For 3rd timer, it might be tough as you have failed twice and your morale and esteem might be very low. Your credentials must be better than the previous two for submission. For those who can afford to go overseas to pursue medicine is the best as the competition is less as compared here locally.

For my son's case, prior applying medicine, he has carefully laid out his course options in order of his interest. After failing to study medicine, he got to fall back on courses that still centered in allied health sciences in area of medicine. At lease you are still studying what you are really passionate about and not just for the sake of getting a MBBS or MD title. What really matters are that you still get to contribute your knowledge acquired to better help and improve our allied healthcare systems.

It's not the end if you don't get into medicine. What's important is your passion and your state of mind. What you really want in life.

I have spoken too much and hope that it had lend much encouragement. The results will come soonest. Again may God bless all the DS and DD with the best outcome according to his will and not ours. Good luck!

              Dear Desmond

I don't think you've spoken too much in this chat group but rather very comforting & encouraging words.

From here, I can see you've put in some effort & time to write to help to boost the morale among anxious parents and DS/DD

To all fellow Parents whose DD/DS is on NUS WL, pls remind your child to be very diligent in checking their email Inbox/Spam/Junk folder.

From last year's experience, the email came in on 11 Jun, Friday evening and DS is only given up to 13 Jun, Sunday to accept the Offer else the vacancy will be given to the next candidate down the list.

Fortunately DS booked out early on that day after completing his Outfield etc.

Hope this info helps. Good luck to all. The wait for a closure is indeed nerve wrecking.

Hi Sunny, no prior experience with NTU WL as DS did not take BMAT and only applied to NUS then.

Not to worry too much and just wait for the best possible outcome. A rough gauge is that NTU LCKSoM practices the UK standards of prioritizing and shortlisting their candidates. But come year 2023, NTU will be moving away from UK systems.

If your DD's BMAT is good then she could be in the front among the other queuing candidates. So the chances of getting an offering is there.

NTU quotas is just around 150 as compared to NUS of 300. Students who applied for NUS also applied NTU. These students also gotten offering from both sides or being placed on waiting list from both sides.

NUS YLLSoM has been a favorite choice and most likely some of them might jump over to NUS from NTU. Let hope that those NTU students jumping over and coupled with some students going into NS and will study medicine later, will open up more vacated slots for those in queue to get better chances.

Wishes you and DD the best outcome. Stay positive as there are plenty of other exciting avenues one can still go for besides medicine.
