You are connected to the internet much earlier than I do. I only got sight of the internet when I was in university, especially after getting to know a number of people who are studying and researching in this field. I am a bit of an odd ball within this group of people since this isn't exactly my field of study
Wah... you really know the history of the Internet! I started using email in 1986 or 87 in ang moh land, worked in the same lab in NCSA a year before Marc Andreessen created the world's first browser Mosaic and he moved on to create Netscape. Guess I was born a year too early otherwise I might have joined him and his team
For all I know he might have filled the spot in NCSA that I vacated
Too bad I had to complete my NS so my first sight of the Internet browser was when I started work in 1992... dunno what it was :scratchhead: so I worked on something else. Sigh.
Yeah, during those days, the Internet really crawls because we had to use modems to connect to the Internet. So we would connect to bulletin boards, and type ASL this and ASL that when someone comes online. So different from nowadays where everyone think of Netflix and movies when you say \"internet\".
@floppy ah... do you miss the news.* groups? I do.
I do miss (sort of) the old Usenet such as the news.*, rec.* and talk.* groups. There are other forums that I frequent on the dark, quiet corner of the internet that are designed like the old newsgroups (mainly text based) and occupied mainly by older inhabitants of the internet :rotflmao: -

I was connecting to NUS network using 1200kbps (or was it 2400kpbs) but there wasn't any internet then.

Didn't get to experience email and internet until somewhere mid 1990s, I think. -

By mid 1990s modems should be up to 56Kbps (the theoretical limit of analog lines) but I think I stopped modeming at 33.6kbps :). Don't remember buying a 56Kbps modem. US Robotics, Supra, etc... that names come flooding back.

1200bps is like 1.2Kbps. The LAN line started marketing at 128Kbps, which is like 128 times faster than 1.2kbps
and now I'm on a \"slow\" 2Mbit line or 2,000,000 times faster than a 1200bps modem! Nobody talks about line speeds anymore because it is no longer a problem, but prior to 2000, it IS a big problem.

I think I'm older than most here, and I was also in a humanities course. I went through my university course (mid-80s) as if computers hadn't been invented yet - everything completely handwritten! Including weekly essays that could be up to 2000 words long.

When I started work in 1986, my corner of the public service had just gone into word processors, still not PCs. There was a typing pool (who remembers these?) of several ladies who would take our handwritten documents and word process them for us, then we would correct on the printout, and they would amend... Storage was 5\" floppies. Internet? No-one had heard of it yet!
I had access to PCs for the first time in 1987, not for personal use, but because the library was being automated, and I was involved. My first \"personal\" PC only arrived on my desk in 1994 or so. At that time, still no personal email, and access to the infant web was by dial-up modem.
When I tell the modern university students, they can't imagine it. They also can't imagine when we had no phones (mobile or landline) in university - to send a message to a friend, you went to her door and knocked, and if she wasn't in, you left a note on her door (paper and pencil always pinned or blu-tacked on the door). -
Went to SS today didn’t see fresh chicken. Guess wet mkt will have better chance.
Cooked braised pork. -
Any recipes for post surgery tonic soup? I was told by tcm avoid chicken eggs and peanuts post surgery but then why chicken essence is ok.

It depends on what surgery and there are many different ways to do soup. Chinese adv is post surgery use fish. You can buy fish slices or cod fish fr the mkt which you can stir fry with ginger & put in some wolfberry. For soup, can fry the bones before putting in the soup to prepare yr rich stock & if u’re putting in herbs like huai san, dangshen & red dates or black dates together, yr soup will be rich but put in wolfberry only 15 min before dishing out coz it’ll disintegrate if cooked too long in the stock. Some post survey recipes are 人参 with wolfberry & red dates put into slow cooker with fish (marinate lightly with salt & hua tiow jiu) put in last 20 min. Can cook snakehead fish with Chinese herbs.

According to my TCM doctor, Chicken is heaty (热) and she asked me not to take so much Chicken otherwise my skin problem would come back again. For post surgery, my mother always prepares snakehead fish soup (生鱼汤)for wound healing.
