Hi, I think it’s fine as long as student is able to keep talking correctly after the re-direction.
Hi would like to get some advice on oral. If the student did not hear or misunderstood the teacher’s qn (due to teacher’s strong Chinese accent) and started to answer wrongly. But when tr redirected the student, the student was able to answer, will a lot of marks be deducted?
Student couldn’t hear the first time, so he asked once but still could not catch it and did not want to ask for the 2nd time.
I have shared over at another thread that the answer need not be the best model answer. It’s different from written exams like Science where student must answer very precisely to get the marks.

As long as the student is able to converse fluently his/her points without much further prompts after the initial redirection, there wouldn’t be much penalisation - just 1-2 points for content component. After all, there are other questions too.
Just curious - were there 2 examiners? If there are 2, I think the other teacher should be “able to tell” that the other examiner’s accent may be an influencing factor. Also, other students might have faced similar issues, so not to over worry.
Regarding questioning when unclear, it will be good to remind the students to clarify when in doubt - just remember to be polite and speak in Mandarin (instead of “huh” or 老师你可以repeat吗?). -
”老师,对不起,您可以再讲一次吗
?” is my DS’ standard answer to buy time if he needs more time to think. But cannot use too many times in a row

Yes he asked once but then still couldn’t catch. So he didn’t want to ask again.

Yes there were 2 teachers. I was also surprised why the other tr didn’t say anything. Or maybe it’s my son’s issue. No idea. Don’t want to ask him further coz he seems upset. -
Oh well… at least it’s a learning point for us now. Better it happened for prelims than PSLE.
So now I need to teach him to try to repeat the qn and ask the tr if that is what she asked. This is after asking a 2nd time and he still didn’t catch it. -
Thank you! Fingers crossed he didn’t lose too many marks.

My kid shared with me last time that 2 teachers: 1 ask questions / carry out the conversation while the other observes. Both teachers assign marks.

Yes, same observation from my kid.

And don’t worry about the 2 examiners whispering to each other almost immediately after they dismiss u. They are not saying anything bad about you. They are just doing their job as they are obliged to discuss and agree on a common mark, I think.
Prelim orals were held after school for some primary schools. Examiners super pressed for time. They even cut short DS’ polite greeting (very long memorised phrase) and told him ok ok, sit down. And he was the first kid :rotflmao: -

My son heard the 2 teachers laughing after he left the classroom. 😂

The examiners agree between themselves who to ask what or who to do the asking. From my personal experience, we usually rotate so that all 3 of us are engaged in the "conversation".
For oral conversation, the examiners will discuss and come to a conclusion what final mark to assign, whereas for compo, the average marks of the 2 markers will be taken - in the even that the diff. in marks graded between the 2 of them is more than 4 marks, a 3rd marker will grade the work and his/her graded marks will be the final one.
On a side note, if the examiner ask if 有什么要补充的吗,it’s not a hint that the student’s answer is not sufficient, it’s to confirm if he/she can move or to the next question. Similarly, students shouldn’t be too sensitive to examiner’s expression or actions like not smiling or nodding the head etc. - don’t read too much into it and get affected.
