      Hi all,

Can I check if joining the Junior Sports Academy (JSA) by MOE is important for DSA in future?

      Thank you in advanced.

JSA had been suspended for the past 2 years due to the pandemic.

I am guessing your child is in P4 this year and MOE has informed u of upcoming selection trials for those interested to join JSA?

I had friends’ kids 3 years back who joined JSA and enjoyed the program. It is like an affordable learn-to-play program for various sports. Unofficial recruitment scheme for Singapore Sports School. Not really beneficial for DSA into other schools.

I agree. By P4, you should already have a niche cca with medals in the bag if you really want to stand a good chance at dsa sports. The JSA program in recent years is really trying to help SSS talent scout for raw talent by exposure to a variety of sports and games. The old JSA academy was more individual sports focused where kids are identified to join the niche sport (which kid is already very good at) for further \"free\" training, as a stepping stone into the national team.

Thank you everyone for your kind inputs. I’m just so ignorant over JSA as there isn’t any during my DD time.

Now knowing the importance of DSA, I hope to prepare my DS too.

For parents whom got kids admitted to sports DSA or got shortlisted for one this year, can I check what do schools look out for in Sports DSA in students?

Pardon me for my ignorance on this.

Sports DSA is highly competitive, maybe even more competitive than PSLE lol. The top schools will only pick the top sportsboys/sportsgirls in Singapore. Competition medallists.

If your son can rise to be the top in that sport in a short time, can try DSA. Otherwise, need to manage your expectations. Been thru that for my son and not expecting any offer.

                Hi parents

Primary school children are occupied with their studies. May I enquire how much additional time and effort your child is spending in their talent domain, to build up good results, to have a shot at DSA?

JSA, like ‘normal’ sports CCA, is not useful for DSA. What you need is competition results, some sort of achievements and, ideally, medals. If JSA is the first step towards that, great. Otherwise, meh.

                  Need to manage your expectations.

I think the question is too wide.

Academic talent - probably no need to spend a lot of additional time, depending on whether you consider watching tv, surfing web, reading additional materials, attending “enrichment” classes pertaining to the talent area as “additional” time.

For performing arts / sports - I think you are looking at 2 or more sessions a week (2 to 3 hrs each session) to be adequately competent for DSA consideration, ie doesn’t mean you will get DSA-ed but you should be able to clear the first basic filter.

I think it depends on the child and interest level. My DS loves art so he attends art classes and enjoys expressing himself through his work. I say that like he churns out paintings daily but quite the opposite. He enjoys sketching and drawing which he only does when he's free. We still grill him on his school work but it's nice to know that he has an interest which he can tap on. I'm not suggesting that he's an artist but if it's something which he can do other than spending time glued to the TV, I'm happy.

So, to answer your question, the amount of time and effort depends on your child's interest in the domain. If he or she is very interested and has a talent which can be tapped, then the hours (however long) would be well spent. However, if he or she isn't really interested or lacks the talent, then the effort may seem more laborious and time passes slower.

I'd say about 5-8 hours more per week (which includes weekends) beyond school work. It seesaws obviously as when there are exams nearing, the priority shifts to school work and art gets placed on the backburner.

Obviously, it's also domain-dependent as some domains are more time-consuming and require more investment in effort and resources from the child.

If the objective is to get DSAed, and not only to compete, academic talent also need not spend alot of additional time?

For performing arts/sports, if at least 2 weekly sessions of 2 to 3 hrs each, is adequate for DSA consideration, then to get selected for DSA, will doubling the efforts of at least 2 weekly sessions of 2 to 3 hrs each be enough?
