Hello,


Would any kind daddy/mummy here be able to share strategies for helping to memorise keywords and answering techniques for Science?

Feedback from tutor and my own observations is that my son is able to understand the concepts well but he can’t express them clearly in the required science terms. I’ve tried making him memorise required keywords and answering techniques but he doesn’t seem to be able to do so.

Not sure if this is because he is left-handed as some that left-handers have brains that are wired differently.

Does anyone have kids that are like this and/or be able to share how to overcome this?

Is he able to identify the topic that the question is testing? Once he can identify, then recall the key concept for the topic and use the concept to answer. There aren’t many concepts they need to know, but the challenge is in application.

Usually he can but he just can't seem to recall the keywords or certain ways to explain.

He is able to do fine for MCQ which shows he understands the concepts, except for a few careless mistakes, but OEQ is always the killer.

E.g. he will write something like \"Fibrous husk - so it can float/will not sink\". However despite repeated reminders, he can't remember that he needs to state that it is the air trapped in the air spaces within the fibrous husk that allows it to float and be carried further away from the parent plant.

Or he knows that exercise makes you breathe faster because you need more energy but he isn't able to remember that he needs to write that the faster breathing is to take in more oxygen to produce more energy and to remove carbon dioxide from the body.

Forcing him to memorise only works for that few minutes and after that, it is back to square one.

How do you all usually tackle such problems?

If it’s just problem with phrasing, then more practice would then help. Maybe from now till PSLE, you can test him verbally everyday, it’s less painful than doing papers non-stop.

Thank you! Yes I am planning to do repeated bite-sized revision for science hoping it will help with his retention of information.

My suggestion is for you to compile similar questions per topic during your bite size revision. For example : Float and sink questions with a template answer/ sentences highlighting the keywords/phrases. So he gets it and remembers that when he sees such question, he will need to use this \"template\". For P6, you would want to encourage adaptability, so it might be good to also point out the key information to focus on and how it will affect his answers. Extend the question too/their thinking. For example, what other fruits/materials will act the same like the coconut husk.

Write down/Print and paste on big cards/stiff paper. Shuffle and repeat. Repetition will help. You can also play spot the errors. Get him to see what is \"missing\" from the answer or similar games to help him recognise his answers are incomplete.

I'm trying out this method for a child under my care with learning/spelling difficulties and the child has shown a vast improvement in grades.

I got the idea from my older kids when they went thru PSLE. I noticed thats there is a \"standard\" answer(s) and the kids will compete to perfect their answers. Often copying how the teacher did it or read from their peers who did better. Some kids are able to recognise these easily and are motivated to refine their answers till they can produce top scores. Others may need the help to craft the answers or extra motivation/support to remember and reproduce the answers.

Will find out today after kiddo comes home from school, whether any of the earlier papers have been returned to them.

Some tutors say earliest coming Monday.

We are taking a good breather now, maybe meet up with some friends and go visit some places of interest. This may be the window of opportunity to be down with Covid, not later

We still have LC tomorrow, so I'm not expecting anything this week (at least for us). But supposedly the teachers graded all of the exams same day after completion. Some sections even like the real thing; one teacher one question, pass down the line until all have been completed

I am also thinking about giving the kid a week off. Next week in school should also be fairly light, other than getting the papers back.
