Since recent posts are about GEP, hoping to get some feedback here. I read there are 7 secondary schools with GEP (or SBGE). ie pri GEP kids may only continue at these schools, but their entry is via usual psle or DSA route.
Are these kids assessed to be favourable when applying through DSA? -

There is a math class which ur child can take in P6, and if he passes the class, he can skip it in Y1 if he enrolls in NUSH. For science, it is a robotics workshop.
DS2 is very interested in coding but purely recreational. Not planning to use it for DSA. He follows tutorials on YouTube to build his own games. I'm not that familiar w infocomm stuff so maybe another parent can better advise. -
My understanding (anyone feel free to add or correct):
#1. GEP kids need to enter any secondary school via DSA or S1. The school they receive an offer from (DSA) or are posted to (S1) need not be a school that is offering SBGE. They have to qualify on their own just like all other students.
#2. Not all of the seven secondary schools have GEP (SBGE) classes in Sec 1 and Sec 2 at this time. Some schools have decided to have mixed classes across the entire cohort. Other schools still have dedicated GEP classes (plus some high PSLE scores) in Sec 1 and Sec 2. Come Sec 3, there isn’t a difference and everyone had to select (and/or qualify for) combinations/programmes based on interest (and/or merit).
#3. Not every GEP kid makes it through via DSA. There is probably a concentration in some domains (and some schools), but the domains are not exclusively GEP kids either. At the end of the day, one’s talent and accomplishments/portfolio in the domain is what matters most. This has probably become even more true after general academic domain/GAT tests were stopped several years ago. The GEP kids may have a natural advantage in some domains and their curriculum/programme could present some additional opportunities, but they are still competing very strongly against one another.
As it pertains to scores, it is correct that only MOE knows the truth. That being said, based on secondary school allocation and anecdotal information, I think one can also make some educated guesses/estimates. I am not sure about AL4-AL5, but I would not be surprised if more than half of the GEP kids are scoring AL6 or better at PSLE.

Good evening everyone. Other than Anglican High School, which sneaked in their results earlier this morning, it remained quiet throughout Sunday (unless someone can share otherwise). Tomorrow (12 Sept) is the big day for schools which have yet to announce their DSA results. So, here’s wishing all children (and parents too) who are still waiting the very best of luck for tomorrow!

There were some posts years ago that suspected (guessed?) that the Selection Test is looking for either a) very very high in Math and proficient in English or b) very very high in English and proficient in Math [General Ability would be considered for both cases as well]. I.e. being in the top 2% (number made up) of both Math and English would probably put you in the Top 1% of combined scores but that's not how the test is setup (in contrast, PSLE is more a top X% across all subjects when looking at the aggregate score). Of course, there will be some kids that are very very high in both Math and English and \"proficient\" is a relative term above (they may still be able to get AL1 or AL2 for all subjects).
Sounds like fiction to me. From what I hear from DS2, most of the kids in his GE class skew 1 way or the other. Some are v talented in math/science but struggle with language, while others are great with languages but find math/sci challenging. There are of course all rounders who are equally good at everything but i'm pretty sure they're not such a dominant majority....
Again, these are observations or guesses from the outside; I can't say one way or the other whether that's how it works... -

I doubt GEB announce these statistic. Not likely the majority of the GEP cohort scores AL4-AL6 for P5 and P6 mid year. Firstly, GEP papers are harder as compared to mainstream papers. Secondly, not easy to score AL1 for Chinese for most, especially so for GEP exam papers.
For P6 prelims more likely, but I doubt anybody can confirm if it’s the majority. Back to the topic of DSA, P6 prelim results don’t matter.
The GEP kids do mainstream chinese papers now, they only do GEB papers for English, math and science -

My DS is an average student in p3, el around 80s and math are 90s range, he got into GE as a surprise as most of his classmates did better in P3 year end than him did not get thru. But his journey in GE is never smooth. His P4 GE EL ever got as low as 30% 😭 however his math is always the top. He is always bottom in class as both EL and science are very challenging for him.
His base is strong in MO, score numerous award in MO including nmos gold and top 4 in sch team but not top 30 individual.
Smops gold and mathlympic gold. RI Distinction with 97.85%
His P6 mid year GE total AL is 13 ( with math as 1 and science as 5), he was given the opportunity to do NUSH Y1 math and robotic module but unfortunately he is still drop from NUSH after round 2. We ever appeal and was rejected.
We gave up HCI DSA interview because the date clash with NUSH and thought his chance in NUSH was higher as he has done 2 modules with them.
My personal opinion NUSH selection is base on actual day performance and when I appeal they look at his Result.
Why do I say this, one of his classmates got GE subject AL5D in 4 subjects with 1 in math and 2 in science was dropped in round 2 as well but that gal do not plan to appeal. With her result she can easily enroll in any ip school without any doubt. Because she would definitely be AL4D in psle for sure.
My DS prelim is AL10 but scoring Al2 in math which is something I could not accept, his GE math is 1 but Ms math is 2 🙄. He did mention some questions he overthink and some questions he underthink.
His science and EL in MS is AL3, GE AL5. I would say the banding in GE vs MS, MSwill be at least 1-2 AL better than GE.
Our last hope is DHS now, praying hard DHS will accept him 🙏🙏.

Yes, you can choose to attend both. My kid only participated in the math class which wrapped up by June. It was self paced (about 8 lessons, mostly remote and own time own target) and really not very time intensive at all. Don't think it will have any material impact on PSLE prep. Not sure for the robotics workshop.

Sounds about right... DS2 fits that profile, math is definitely his very obvious strength even in GE but in MS, he was doing pretty well in EL too, scoring well in compo in p3 etc. In GE however it is a different story. His EL writing is probably average at best among his classmates and he does struggle with the EL coursework. It is no walk in the park for him... so yes, \"proficient\" is relative!.
