Can someone enlighten me why rulers are not allowed to bring into the GEP test? It is bold and underlined in the MOE letter to emphasize the importance.
      Maybe not required.

        Good question.
Can't be to prevent cheating as there's nothing to cheat.
Or are they trying to mitigate the violence that might occur during the test? 😂

Maybe the kids must be able to draw straight line free hand as part of the requirements? Hahaha

Hi, Can anyone enlighten me with this , If a child is not cleared screening test means, his chances of getting into E2K maths and science becomes less? less chance to be selected for National olympiads like NMOS, SMOPS , RSO etc…

                For our school, yes correct.

If your child is exceptional in Math but not in GEP, talk to the Math teacher because schools typically want to send kids they know can make the school proud. Lim Jeck is not a GEPper but he was the most well-known kid in Math competitions and represented Singapore.

There are many reasons I can think of since they are P3 kids, just to name a few here

I believe they want to assess the kids' ability on simple mental calculation, a ruler can help in the calculation.
Also, if there are questions related to position and distance but with no diagrams drawn, a ruler can ascertain that faster than making a drawing of it. Think for giftedness, the space up there in the brain is important for both storage and processing and they need to determine the \"largeness\" of that space by eliminating any possible external help.

P3 kids may not understand the phrase \"not drawn to scale\"(I sometimes even have problem explaining this to adults), so without a ruler, they cannot attempt to measure anything and put on their thinking hat instead.

Another funny reason I can think of is some fancy rulers have the scroller in the middle. For kids who are not interested in the test but forced to take it, may spend time playing with the rule to \"tikam\" the MCQ answers and disturb the other kids. Of course, without the ruler, tikam can still happen but that fancy ruler may end up as a toy and disturb/distract other candidates. 😂

Let him know many roads lead to Rome as long as he is passionate about something.
Work on things he can control and let go of things he cannot for now.
First time maybe a mistake of assessment of his abilities but this mistake cannot repeat itself forever as long as he is good.
Also, if you feel he can contribute in Math competition, seriously don't forget to check with the teacher, or the teacher may even alert you later cos some GEP schools open participation for some Math competitions to every class, not just GEP. All the best to him!
