During the old days when they released National Stats for Quality Passes (A* and A), MT was usually around 7X% while the other 3 subjects (EL, MA and SC) were usually 4X%. E.g., In 2015, CL 73.1 %, EL 44.9%, MA 45.4%, SC 41.9%. The old PSLE Grade A is 75 marks and above.
All along (since more than 10 years ago), I believe that the grade for Chinese is quite curved upwards (based on the As my son and nephew got despite their half past six levels).
When I looked at my grand niece AL3 for Chinese, I sort of confirmed my speculation even more (she is a 'half mute' during oral conversation throughout her 6 years during school's practices and usually scored around 50% with teachers' frequent comment as 'inaudible', and I gave up training her on oral as 'not value for time'), her compo is so-so maybe 65% type, listening is ok around 90%, written is OK around 90%). Her school's averaged score usually was around 70s. She cannot hold a Chinese conversation or read another Chinese word out from her textbook vocab range (I trained her only for exam purposes due to her 'limited capacity').
So this AL3 seemed like a 'curved score'. Did anyone feel similar (as in your child's Chinese score is 'better than expected)'?
Asking out of curiosity.
*She exceeded expectation of Eng and Chinese at AL3 and Science and Math at AL5 when I was forecasting AL5 for Languages (her Eng score in school usually around high 50s / low 60s incl prelim) and Science and an AL6 for Math (failed her Math or barely passed throughout her P6 school exams). It has been a tough 6 years of struggles for her and we are all glad that this segment ends on a higher note.
If it goes by the same standard, a much higher percentage of students will get AL4 (75 marks) & better for MT than the other 3 subjects in PSLE.
However, there is no exact mapping between the old scores and the AL scores so it is not clear whether the above still applies today.
It is reported that around half of students taking standard subjects today score in the range of 75 and above when they came out with the AL score ranges.
Hope this helps. -

I like all you put down and score and lang eligibility because we can forget. Best to also put location :siam:

Err. Obviously not ok… unless you wanted Jurongville and the rest are just fillers. Even then, I will probably put one school with COP 22 for safety cos schools in the 18-22 region tend to have bigger movement (+- 2 maybe) than schools at the higher end (+- 1).

I agree with CGS (but that’s my personal opinion and preference).
I think with a score of 8, without HMT, and a foreigner, there are only a limited number of IP schools within reach. At best, it’s only to put ONE such school at the first choice and then hope for the best.
:thankyou: :grphug: -
Saw this being discussed elsewhere, also heard some personal stories. Anyone intending to pay for review of PSLE mark for Math?
Paper was supposedly easier than past years. Yet I counted at least 10 parents saying their kid’s Math grade was unexpectedly low (2-4 AL grades lower than prelims).
Yet MOE claims no bell curve… -

Are you near option 2? Is this order by proximity? -
Hi all. Need some advice. My DS has AL9. We are Singapore citizen. Was thinking about putting the first 2 options as follows:-
1: Victoria School OP
2: SJI OP
What is the likelihood of VS will kena ballot? And if it does, do you think he will be able to get into SJI OP or should I not risk it and put SJI OP as first choice?
