Hi parents, I would like to seek your opinions on HCL in secondary school. I read that getting high scores in CCAs, taking HCL and special program for 3rd language could be a possible ways to max the bonus points of 4 for entry into JC.

My question is, my son did not take HCL in PSLE, would it be possible to take HCL in secondary and any parent can share how difficult it would be? He has AL3 for CL.

Alternatively, should he consider taking 3rd language, which may be quite a lot of effort. TIA.
For HCL, check the Eligibility Letter. The standard MOE criteria is a) AL8 or better or b) AL9 - AL14 and i) AL1-AL2 in MT or ii) Distinction/Merit in HMT. Some schools (mainly SAP I think) will override the MOE criteria and let all kids take HCL in Sec 1.

For Third Language, the only ones that give 2 bonus points for JAE are Malay/Chinese Special Programme and Bahasa Indonesia. The Eligibility Letter should say if your child is able to take any of these as well (Malay Special Programme or Bahasa Indonesia in your case).

          Hi All,

My girl got AL6(D), her choice as below,
          1- RGS COP6
          2- SNGS COP7(P)
          3- NGS COP7(D)
          4- DHS COP8(D)
          5- Cedar Girl COP8
          6- NCHS COP12(D)

          Any advice?
There’ll be a good chance for ballot for RG if you’re Singapore citizen. Your girl will enter SN if not successful at RG. Congratulations on the good results!!

            …
Eligibility Criteria for Secondary School HMTL
            (i) An overall PSLE Score of 8 or better

            OR

(ii) An overall PSLE Score of 9 to 14 (inclusive); and attain
AL 1 / AL 2 in MTL or
            Distinction / Merit in HMTL

He definitely won’t meet the second criteria. If he can meet the first, he is eligible to take. Otherwise, no.

Affiliation to the JC can also give your child 2 bonus points, but cap at 4 points max. for all 3 (CCA/HCL or 3 Lang/Affiliation)

For CCA, there are certain criteria to fulfill to get the 2 bonus points. Some include attendance, participation and years of commitment to the CCA. You may want to find out when your child decides on the CCA.

For HCL, check the Eligibility Letter attached to your psle results slip. I think it is not difficult to pick up with a AL 3 in CL. Your child must be willing to put in effort though. Read, write and watch, to get more exposure.

Thank you Bentley88 for your valuable inputs.
Agree with you on the RGS situation. Since we have 6 choices, we thought of trying our luck!
For the SAP school, my girl is open to take mother tongue lessons from outside. So it becomes a matter of eligible to apply or not? :scratchhead: yeah, there are still other elements to take into consideration
For taking tamil outside of school, most likely it will be at Umar Pulavar Tamil language centre at Beatty Road. You will need to factor in time/distance from your secondary school to go there after school and then from there back home. Usually classes are twice a week. Since it's after school, you will need to ensure there are no clashes with CCAs or other after school activities your daughter will have.

May I know for 3rd language, if opt for 1 language now, can they change later on or must commit to that language through out?

We are SC, that's the worry we have, and if 2nd choice (Nanhua high) moves up to AL10, then we will have to face balloting and the ones who put as first choice will get in first.
We know of someone whose son chose SJI as 1st choice last year, SC, but landed on 2nd choice.

Hi my daughter is similar with u (AL3 and not taking HCL) she just moved here from overseas 2 yrs ago so her Chinese now is improving a lot (last time AL5) her overall is AL8 and eligible to take HMTL

IMHO if you’re offered and eligible for HMTL (can check your envelope for eligibility letter) you should try, let’s say if it doesn’t work out well you can just discuss with teacher/school.
(We came all the way here only to improve her Chinese)

For 3rd lang I think will be benefit only if your kid is into that offered languages, otherwise just a waste of time and better to focus on CCA and other subjects that he’s good at

All the best for him :celebrate:
