From July onwards til PSLE my dd slept only 7hrs per day, mostly did Science & Chinese revision but both got “only” AL3 🫠 and now her growth is not optimal, don’t lose sleep over PSLE 😝 it’s not worth it lol

Parents allow this late sleeping habit or it’s no choice cos too much revision?

She didn’t want to sleep yet because she wants to study MORE, esp Science

because the amount of materials need to be covered is no joke, and the fact that she just joined SG primary at P4 so she missed a lot of things (esp in Science & Chinese)
She had tuitions after school (we don’t speak Mandarin so Chi 3times/week), after went home she made her own NOTES.
She actually likes to sleep  -

My daughters also came to Sg school late, so I know the feeling of needing to \"catch up\". But I believe that sleep is more important as they are more productive when they are rested. My kids generally got at least 7-8 hrs sleep per night even up to A levels.

Couldn't agree more. I think the primary kids should be at 8 hours minimum (9-10 hours better) and secondary kids 7 hours minimum (8-9 hours better). For the latter, late CCA days, project deadlines, etc will squeeze this every now and then, but in general I prefer that the kids go to school well rested and make the most of their time in class with the teacher/other students (alert, higher cognitive awareness). Of course, I realize many kids are not at these levels and everyone has different constraints. But it (adequate sleep) is one reason why kids need to be efficient (have some leisure but not waste excessive time) during the school year.

Even for the exam days, at some point you know what you know and there are things you don't know. The challenge of trying to cram is that some days the brain just doesn't turn on the next day. It (cramming) can work, but it can really backfire as well.
Everyone needs to manage their own child and decide what is best, but generally I would suggest trying to keep the same routines from June - PSLE in P6. -

To add on from the advice on rest and sleep by the veteran parents, I also gathered that the months leading to PSLE can be quite stressful for many children. Hence parents can schedule exercise and family bonding time in their daily/weekly routine. PE, Art and Music lessons may be reduced or completely omitted, depending on schools.
Any daily routine from experience parents to share to prepare our kids a little a day…
do p6 assessment book by topic first or
Continue practise past year papers?[/quote]
Get ready for bed at 9pm (can have quiet activity before, e.g. reading a book)
10 hours of sleep.
1 hour of exercise for at least 3 times per week
1.5 hours of dinner and family activity e.g. Chess or board games, daily
The above was how we derive our routine previously but child has no tuition but sch ends at around 6pm almost eveyday then. We started this routine from June to Oct. Children need stamina for the journey, as it is a marathon, not a sprint.
We focused on Chinese revisions, mainly decipher the chinese compre texts using past year papers, and practised oral esp for chinese. In the end, CL grade was not as expected. thinking back, we would not do anything different. The time parents spent with our children are worth much more than grades in P6.
Child is happy and comfortable in her new school and looking forward to going to sch everyday.
Visited Poly open house on Sat. Met a year 1 from Queensxxxy Sec. She was a vice head prefect in school and got very good results in O level, enough to enter good JCs. Very outgoing, high self esteem, exudes confidence when speaking, eloquent in sharing her views, choices and making decisions. Mature in sense of knowing what she wants in career path. Met a few such kids who were the open house ambassdors. Another one, alr started investment using parent account during sec sch days, showed us his investment account on phone, +6000 last year to -1000 now. Using his own money, very eloquent and know exactly what he wants in life, chose poly B&F even though his results can go to good JCs. Employers would seek out such candidates definitely. -

We do topical practices for weaker subjects and once gotten a relatively good mastery of it, we move on to do past year/top school papers. From may/June onwards, they do about 2 papers a week.

Both my twins score AL5 for last year psle. Doing other schools past yr papers will be a gd way to expose them to a range of questions. Propose to also start their oral prep early as it is quite time consuming. Their tuition ctr gave them many topics which they have to prepare so my twins will do up mind maps for the oral. As you do more & more, you will realise things you say for 1 oral topic can also be used for many other related oral topics. And when you prep for eng oral, it can also be used for chinese oral (provided yr kids do the translation). The teachers in school will not have sufficient time to practise oral in class.
For sci, need to really focus on the key words & take note that even publishers answers in the psle answer booklet can be incorrect. So do double cfm with school teachers. -
Hi parents, could you please advise some oral assessment or resources for practices?
-
Hi, there are oral topics posted on https://lilbutmightyenglish.com/
There are also i think oral practice/ resources that you can purchase on carousell. But i think it would be good if once you get the oral topics/ qns and the child sit down to do a mind map of it instead of memorising someone else model answer. Bec it is always easier to recall something that you hv personally experience rather than saying something that you hv memorised
