Somce JCs have a university advisory service - they can at least give some advice about universities, the admissions requirements for certain courses, the quality of students who got in, etc. In some cases, they may advise a student (based on past performance) to moderate his aspirations, or they might encourage him to aim higher.

Hi all! Not sure if this is the right place to ask but anyone can share more about H2 Bio vs H2 Physics in JC? Heard that H2 Bio is academically more rigorous but not too sure. My girl looking to take BCME or PCME in JC. She took triple science in O Level, both got A1.

Hi all, would like to share a free seminar run by a physics tuition centre. My daughter attended this tuition centre previously, eventually scoring A1 in O Levels. This free seminar will introduce the A Level H2 Physics prospects and demands. If bring along one friend, both can attend for free. Date is 28 Jan Sat / 29 Jan Sun.

A lot depends on the student. Which does your daughter prefer in terms of interest? A student who is interested will not find it as \"rigorous\" as one who is bored. Is she strong in Maths? That will make Physics easier.

My daughter took H2 Physics as she was strong in Maths, and didn't want to handle the more descriptive parts of Bio. She would probably have done fine if she had chosen Bio, but that was a personal choice.

PCME and BCME are the most popular subject combinations for A levels. It will be easy to get tuition help for either subject chosen.


Between P and B, a lot depends on the child’s interest and what he or she plans to pursue in university. Is the child veering towards Life Sciences / BioMed / or even Med or Dentistry, it is an easier transition to university with B than P. If the child plans to pursue Engineering, then the transition to university will be easier with P.

If the student just take 1 Sci eg Chemistry, is there much use for Uni application next time, I wonder? To go to Science courses usually needs at least 2 H2 Sci. For student who opted for this…is it more of just to go to Sci Stream and to experience JC?

I am not 100% sure but I thought more and more courses allow for entry based on Math and one science? I never saved down the prior versions of these files, but I remember people telling me the value of two sciences at JC to keep more options open (perhaps even then the information was dated and based on prior experiences).

Per doodbug's comment, some transitions (and interest) may be easier depending on which one(s) a student took in JC. But other than Medicine, I couldn't find a lot of things that required two sciences or only accepted one specific science (some may exist).

I think some overseas universities should be even more lax on the pre-university requirements.

A level subjects are chosen for a variety of reasons.

Some students just want to maximize their rank points (not an invalid reason) and it can be that the combination with Chemistry as a single science may be chosen as he or she is most confident in scoring with that combination and wants to do the A levels.

I don't think students opt for a single science just to go to Science stream though, or to experience JC. Students opt for JC to experience JC, yes that does happen.
