The setting up of special needs school is commendable. Many are only looking at getting top kids, this move comes very timely…

Reminded me of the toh yi twins case, more and more we read abt such cases on the news, so heartening to know the higher ups are looking into them.

Didn't get in NH too. Yes to many, chinese may be a concern. A few other considerations.
Just speculation, no evidence, but by pure mathematics, if west population is significantly higher than other regions, the demand for GEP, special needs and everything else will increase too.

Friend son got posted to sch, not even in their 3 choices.

Nan Hua Pri would have been nearer for them, but I can understand if he wanted an all-boys school hence chose Cat High.

ACSP in Tengah as a GEP centre versus NHPS: the distinguishing factors would be (i) non-SAP and (ii) Christian school.
If you are offered GEP, I doubt distance is a factor, and even if it is really a factor, I doubt the govt is going to all that trouble to make things convenient for the westies.

CNA is having a “documentary” series on meritocracy coming up soon. If keen do have a watch.

I’m glad some higher-ups are doing their part to change our world for the better.
Moving ACS to Tengah doesn't change anything because parents with means will still have the advantage over others when it comes to primary school admission, logistics, enrichment etc.

Having an elite school in the west may also add pressure on those HDB dwellers living in Tengah. Imagine the stream of luxury vehicles coming to school during drop-off and pick-up. (a common sight for ACS Barker or Bukit Timah belt primary school).

If the goal here is meritocracy then the best thing to do is to do away with affiliation for ACS boys.

I think better to look at birthrate, demographic distribution & density of BTO instead of raw population.
BTO = young family = young children.
Matured estate = old people

In the west, there are NH and Henry Park, so I am just curious why your friend's son couldnt get into them

Perhaps your friend wasted their choice selection by choosing far away popular GEP schools like ACS and NYPS?
If so, then it's not because there is an insufficient supply of GEP schools in the West, but rather, poor choice of school selection.

Did i write they put AC?? Ny?? :?
Let me recall, there were a few considerations yes. Also didn't get in NH. Like what another parent rightly point out, its preferences, thats why parents are given 3 choices, instead of direct posting.

The need for primary school places, yes, population of younger families of course. You are right!!!

The new housing and innovation hub/district, of course gov is not just responding to one case. They study future trend through careful planning of course.

East has Tao Nan, St Hilda.
NH is not really considered near for west west. If you driving, not much diff to go NH or CHS.
It seem West and North are under a little \"underprovided\". Jurong region line will make travel from north to Tengah shorter in under 30 mins.

MOE cant possibly be planning or hoping to enlarge its GEP program in primary school while trying to make primary school life less stressful at the same time. If GEP becomes too widespread and common, then parents will become even more stressed. I believe over the years, the number of GEP classes in GEP school may have reduced despite the growing number of GEP prep tuition centers popping up.

Perhaps GEP school selection is similar to secondary school posting where the order of choice will determine which student get in first?

I am not saying this is the main reason for the move. GEP only affects a small fraction.

One guess is there is higher demand in the west. So redistribution only. Not not absolute increase.

If schs like RV also move from queenstown to boon lay, as other parents also pointed out, the motivation behind AC move is quite similar. And if sch has same intention, is a win win.

I find some of the 'conspiracy theories' laughable.

As highlighted by press reports and the school's management, ACS were the party that first approached MOE about relocating one of the two ACS primary schools. The reasons stated (for the school's management) were logical and understandable: low birth rates and more younger families moving to new and emerging estates, as well as the need to serve the needs of the wider society.

Not that difficult to guess that probable locations for such a move would either be the Northwest corridor (Tengah and beyond) or the Northeast corridor (Punggol / Sengkang / new future town in Paya Lebar). Those are the places that Singapore would be developing in the next 10 to 30 years. I understand modernity has made many people's memory limited, any text more than 140 characters and any moving images cannot be more than 3 minutes are forgotten, but ACSP is hardly the first primary school to make such a move - SNGS, CHS, MTS, etc have all moved into (then) developing estates.

P/S: As a city state, Singapore is VERY small. Unless ACS wanna move to Pulau Ubin, there's hardly any place that's 'far' or ulu (though I can understand that 'far' is subjective).

The more relevant and interesting discussion would be the choice of which of the two primary schools to move and that's up to the school's management. TBH, I would have thought ACSJ is the more obvious choice because (1) the land in which it occupied does not belong to them (vs Baker Road site which is owned by the Methodist community), and (2) it's 'separated' from the ACS village. The choice of ACSP, thus, could really be due to the history behind the Baker Road site, and the desire to introduce a GEP centre to the Northwest corridor 🤷
I do not think I am the only one who find the given reasoning incoherent, because it is not as if ACSP at its current address, is facing a declining intake and has to move to a new area with high numbers of school-going kids. Year after year, applicants have to ballot within 1km during phases 2B and 2C to get into ACSP.

Unless it’s like First Toa Payoh Pri where only 1 kid registered for phase 2C, then of cos not enough 6yrs old residing in the area to apply to go into the school.

CHIJ St Nic relocated because govt wanted to take back the Bras Brasah site and likewise for Cath High, because govt wanted to redevelop that prime land site for SAM. Not because these schools approach MOE to want to relocate themselves. And in theory, govt can take back the Winstedt piece of land (being state land afterall) if ACS reject to relocate to Tengah.

Maybe it’s face saving move for ACS to quote 造福人群 as a motive to relocate to Tengah. It’s like when a minister has been asked to step down, poor state of health is often cited, to save face. ACSP is a magnet, not facing a declining intake and does not really benefit from a move to Tengah whereas government has good strategic reasons to want to plant a GEP centre in a new town.

So looking at the benefits to be gained, who is more likely to initiate the move?

If it is reported that way by mainstream media, then it cannot be false. But first approached by ACS, doesn’t necessary mean to move to Tengah. Could be just an intention to shift out one sch.

If it was ACSJ to move out, it may not be so impactful. Might as well go full scale. Alumni kids can still go to bukit timah site. Or get 2nd home in west.
