I was from that era too, but I remember everyone around me study very hard for all the 4 A-level subjects leh...hahaha...
Max 70RP from 3 H2 subjects, GP compulsory and some subjects that don’t really matter (seriously, does it make a difference if I fail my 4th H2 / H1 subject and what kind of idiot and effort must I put in to fail PW?), it’s the 1980s and 1990s all over again!
So, after all those reforms and changes, we are back to where we started, albeit with a different name. I must thank the Ministry for making my A Level Cert relevant again (at least we can all compare grades without being bothered by the pesky 4th subject)

Are A level grades modulated?

It varied. For some of the stronger students, the impetus was to learn, and if we didn't have to worry about getting grades good enough to get into the course of choice, that was just a bonus.

Does the 3rd H2 have to be the contrasting subject?
In the past, MT was in the RP computation! Together with GP and 3 A level content subjects.
I suspect though, for competitive courses with many 70 pointers, perhaps they cannot require a good 4th content subject grade for shortlisting, it may play an eventual role in the admission consideration.
Cos if not, maybe the weakest 4th H2 would be their contrasting subject, which they dont intend to use for a relevant Uni course. Why would the Uni faculty screen entrants based on that irrelevant subject? -

I'm guessing it is a possibility that popular courses who have to choose between a lot of 70 pointers may look at the 4th subject as a demonstration of strength in breadth and (intellectual/academic) capacity to take on breadth? After all, many of the popular courses (for example, Medicine), they want all rounders. If you are completely only science-bent or research-bent, perhaps that's not the profile they are looking for? Just saying it is a possibility.

In order not to increase the number of perfect scorers significantly, will papers be set tougher??

Is it? Maybe I had an easy combo since double math and physics have a high degree of overlap in terms of content.

wahahhaha + GP which we all didn't study for.

In the credentials arms race, people will go for every advantage they can demonstrate, which will also include capacity to handle a contrasting H2 well.....that's how I see it.

That time still can do triple science and math, standard combination for many science students
