Hi All, need suggestions on how to prepare for MT orals. Any idea how the topics are chosen? Is there any list or is the kid expected to master vocabulary for any topic tested. Pls advice. Thank you.

            Hi,

The topic of "school culture" is mentioned several times in many places.

I would like to ask…how would you compare MGSS, NJC and SCGSS in terms of culture. Thank you.

Hi, my child always writes out of topic or score very low for her content for her English paper 1 compo. Any advice on how I can specifically help her in this area? Thank you!

                Some simple tips to practise:

                - spend at least 5min planning the gist of the story (intro, characters, build-up, crisis/dilemma, resolution of crisis/dilemma, ending)

                - underline/highlight the topic in the question paper. Make sure the topic is mentioned explicitly at least 3 times in the story (preferably beginning, middle and end). This is to point out to the marker that u did not go out of topic.

Hi, my child always writes out of topic or score very low for her content for her English paper 1 compo. Any advice on how I can specifically help her in this area? Thank you!
                    Content can be built through:
                    1. reading up a lot on stories. If storybooks are too long to read, read short stories.
                    2. writing own life stories whenever something interesting happens in a journal.

These will help in secondary school compos as well.

Next is writing to the point
I like to use the example topic of a dilemma picture (exam paper) because students can always write this topic out of point by not balancing the focus of the topic.
Firstly, what is a dilemma? It means it is a situation where one has to choose A or B and choosing A will have a not-so-good effect and choosing B will also have a not-so-good effect, hence a dilemma.
Example, caught best friend cheating in the exam, should you report him or her? If you report, you risk losing a best friend. If you do not report, it is not right because cheating is an act of dishonesty. So how?

                    1. Keep the introduction short and crisp if the intro has not much bearing on the story other than setting the stage.
Some kids get carried away in describing waking up late and rushing to school, too much unnecessary drama because the topic is not \"late for school\". Some also love to have a lot of dialogue with the mum before setting off for school. Again, even if it is no drama, a prolonged no impact on the story dialogue with the mom is again giving an impression of going out of point.
                    2. Narrate the cheating incident briefly else it may go out of point
                    3. Focus on the account of the dilemma, what is the dilemma, why a dilemma?
                    4. Write about the emotional and mental struggles of the dilemma that you are going through, feelings
                    5. Finally the choice made and the outcome of it
                    6. What was learnt.

So in the same way, analyse any topic given and keep the storyline with the meat on the topic like 3, 4 and 5.

                    All the best!

May I suggest you buy the books \"Super-duper Model Composition\" and then use the points mentioned below by Zac's mum to help your child. Which year is your child in? Some kids are NOT natural storybook readers and these books help build content.

Just sharing based on my DS’s experience of going off topic.

                        1. Ensure that child understands the topic and try to repeat it at least 3 times in the compo, just like what Zac’s Mum has pointed out.

                        2. Use the chosen picture or pictures appropriately, ie ensure that the picture is an important part of the story. If you can remove the pic from the story and the story still makes sense, then it’s not used appropriately. So the picture cannot be included in the story as an afterthought. If want to be safe, then try to use at least 2 pictures. My DS made this grave mistake twice during P6 school exams, so for PSLE he used all 3 pictures and he got an AL1.

                        3. In terms of storyline, read up more to get story ideas. Best if you can do your story planning prior to writing but most kids including my DS just skip this part, so I didn’t force him.
