Considerations for all universities


1. Ranking i.e. tied to overseas recognition
2. Recognition by companies i.e. tied to potential pay a student is able to get
3. Recognition by students i.e. is SUSS preferred over other universities?

Would not wish to overgeneralise but these 3 criteria seem to be the natural criteria for most people when choosing a university.

Hi, it’s been almost five years since the last post. Could anyone share their experience and/or view of SUSS? Thank you.

Some ksp had shared , it’s one the 6 uni govern by MOE , under sg education framework . Still better than any other private uni offered in town la, should be bah…

It is still a good choice for A level n poly grads who are not eligible for the popular 3 , nus, smu, ntu. Local HR know what are these universities. Mayb starting pay May be lower but with experiences n skills , may be able to catch up pay in abt 2 yrs time . I heard there are also overseas exchange programs to widen the horizon .

There are now 7 local govt universities in singapore. The newest one is university of the arts.

Often, the students are those who don't think they can get in the other universities. There are also those who are particularly attracted to the courses offered by SUSS but not in the other universities (I think there are some unique ones?). It's also more \"humanities\" compared to SIT.

I think SUSS may also be more flexible in terms of part-time/full-time studies. A young lady in my office is starting a part-time degree programme this year at SUSS, but she says she can choose to do full-time part-way through the programme.

Thank you for the comments. We are looking at the HR degree course but dc is concerned about private sector employees’ perceived quality of the degree. We will continue to ask around. Thanks again.

Just a brief history. SUSS was initially SIM University when it was first started up but then it was brought out of SIM and put under the ambit of MOE and thus became SUSS in 2017. I don’t think it can compare with a degree from the older and more prestigious SMU, but it is growing in popularity with time.

If student has a choice between NUS and SUSS, should they choose NUS because of the brand? Let’s say they like both courses offered. What other factors would swing one to SUSS vs NUS? Besides the brand, what other factors should one consider? Appreciate any opinion. Thanks.

Just an off-the-cuff response without knowing much about either university: If the SUSS course is not preferred for any strong reason, if it were my child, I would probably recommend NUS because -
- established name
- wider range of \"general\" and \"inter-disciplinary\" courses
- wider range of CCAs
- larger campus with (presumably) more amenities

On the other hand, there are reasons that might make SUSS a better choice for some students - smaller student body and campus (cosier, more attention from staff maybe?), fewer distractions (probably), fewer choices of courses and CCA (less bewildering), location (maybe?) etc.
