DSA 2023

Thanks! It’s prob very hard to switch from SEC (O level) to IB. Again have to go through similar to DSA by end Sec 2 where results has to be good and participate in a lot of competitions/extra-curriculars to submit your portfolio to school at the end of Sec 2. DSA is luck as well I feel, cuz some competitions u will win, but some you will not. If u r lucky, you win a few competitions to land you a chance for DSA. On top of juggling the competitions, consistently also have to try hard to maintain academic results.

I suppose primary school will eventually know.. but for my DC's school, not at this point of time. Just last week, one of the staff went around and asked if any of the children have received any selection outcomes. By Sept 11th, all will be out in the open. I mean they should have a record of successful CO/WLs by then, no?

Just curious, will the primary school know the student's DSA results? If yes, will they know earlier than the parents?

Just wondering, if we were to write to MGS, will they reveal how many students they accept transfer for SEC to IB in Sec 2?

The number I've seen before is 10 students, but please double-check with the school or see if anyone else can confirm (things also change year-to-year) if it matters to you.

Anyone please feel free to correct if the above is not accurate. -

#1 Actually, I have no idea what's the statistic for #1. How likely it is to get into IB (ACSI / SJI) via the SEC (O) track? How many slots are there available for SEC students since they already have their own IB 6 years track students? Where can we find the statistics?
Tough call but not a bad spot to be in (congrats :rahrah: ). There's a lot of considerations; here are some initial thoughts.
#1. IP (A) or SEC (O) to JAE: we can't know for sure because kids change / develop on their own and it's still a one-time test in S4. But we may have some idea on how likely it is we can get IB via the SEC (O) track? There is also SJI or the local int'l schools to try in Year 11-12 as well. I think there are a few transfers in S3 to IP (IB), but the last I saw the number is not large (maybe other current parents can confirm).
#2. If there is a strong preference for one of the schools and/or the domain within the school, I will probably go there, irrespective of the track. Not sure what domain you are dealing with, but I think for any specific domain sometimes there is a strong preference for a particular school.
Ultimately, whatever decision the child wants / is on board with is the best choice. Best of luck and regards.
Also, prob need to call up the local international schools to find out what's their criteria for joining IB in Year 11.
Lastly, would a SEC (O) track students have less advantage academically compared to those that join IB since year 1 in MGS/ASC/SJI since they would not have been exposed to the IB curriculum since Sec 1? Would they struggle in IB in year 5/6 compared to those who join in year 1?
#2 - all same domain (academic) -

For ACS(I), the JAE vacancies are 110 - 130 (at least that's what's been posted online in recent years). If you work back from the ending IB cohort and subtract off the S1 IP intakes / S3 IP intakes (I believe ACS(I) adds more spaces in S3 than MGS does), it seems to make sense. The COP has been L1R5 = 5 points (net) the last few years. So statistic wise, I don't know. It's more a question of whether that may be reasonable for the child.

I am not sure on your other questions either. However, I don't think the last one is a big deal because both ACS(I) and SJI add kids from O Level. -

I can help u a bit for #1. Not with the vacancies but the “how likely” for JAE applicants coming from the SEC O level track:

ACSI’s Y5 COP is 5 points (no affiliation discount given);
SJI’s Y5 COP is 7 points.
MGS O level track has affiliation -2 points to ACJC only (COP is 8 for Science stream; 9 for Arts stream. A levels, not IB).
My child is in O level track (not MGS). U are right, damn tiring just thinking of another major exam in 4 years’ time. Also Y3 entry/transfer is like u said, another hard slog academically plus must excel just like another DSA fight.
If u’re ok with A level IP route, my thought is just take either of the other 2 COs u have in hand already. -
For those that hv been waiting … mgs ip results out today!
