Any phrases(词语)made up with previously learnt Chinese characters(字)can be tested/appear in questions/passage. So for the example above, yes, the phrase tested need not be 锻炼.

Such cases usually appear in Q3 or 4 辨字测验 type of question.

        E.g. 这些产品都是从精心挑选的原材料提________而成的。
        (1) 炼
        (2) 练
        (3) 冻
        (4) 栋
        Just to clarify:

I believe the primary school syllabus does not test vocabulary words outside the school syllabus.

Yes, Chinese characters can be combined but in this example 提炼 has another meaning and is totally different from 锻炼 which is in the school syllabus.

A better example will be 印象。印 is learned as 印度 in the syallabus and 象 is quite common as a matching character for other words. So 印象 is considered to be a vocabulary word that might be tested and it actually also came out in one of the passages in the syllabus.

Thanks! Is 命题作文 similar to 情境作文? I noticed that many model composition books do not have 情境作文. I suppose they are rather similar?

Need some advice. Is there a minimum number of pages to write for compo? Given the amount of time, I feel that it is really difficult to write a good compo (especially if Chinese is not strong). Have advised DC to spend more time to think carefully about the storyline before writing, but he is afraid of not having enough time to finish the compo. Would a shorter compo, and/or incomplete compo be better than a compo that goes out of topic?

Yes, they are. 情景作文 is like 命题作文 but with a given outline of story plot.

Officially, the word count requirements (as stated in the instructions of the exam paper) are 100 and 200 words respectively. However, the advisable length will be at least 2.5 pages. It is important to remind the students that the advice on not writing too short a story is because there will not be enough details/descriptions in a short story - i.e. it's about the depth of content/story plotting, not purely word count (because they are cases where students write compositions that are long winded, including sentences that doesn't value add to the content (and worse still, includes mistakes in language expression). So this \"min. target\" regarding no. of pages is more of a personal/unofficial reference/reminder for one to write enough story content.

Both incomplete and out of point stories will result in marks deduction. So, the target must be to write a complete story. One advise is to allocate more time for the climax (e.g. if using the narrative structure of Freytag's Pyramid, the middle part should be longer/more in depth, content wise).
