Prices increase till no idea how much a bread cost now. Really..like starting anew. Look at brand A then compare to Brand B.

I've assumed that the price increases will be generally in tandem across different brands, so as long as it doesn't seem excessive, I've been too lazy to do a comparison. I suppose I should! But since I buy a lot of house brands, I think they will still be generally the best value for money.

One of DS’ assignments for FCE (Food and Consumer Education, or what used to be called HomeEc during our time) was to compare prices of their food ingredients prior to cooking the dish (fried rice, in his case). Apparently (and i didnt know this) all 3 major supermarkets (CS Fresh, Fairprice & Sheng Shiong) have websites and the kids simply tabulated the 3 prices to get the cheapest total cost. Budgeting 101 i guess.


Anyway, he found out that Meadows (Cold Storage’s house brand) is often cheaper than a brand-name food product from SS.

These three supermarkets tog with Giant have websites for online grocery shopping. I use them to check the prices of some items for comparison.

I regularly compare the prices online between Fairprice and SS for some items I know often have sales! I don't bother with CS as it works out more expensive overall, and I don't have a convenient one nearby.

I still end up stocking up at SS because we can use MIL’s Merdeka Gen card there for (relatively) substantial discount compared to other places.

The perception is that CS is always the most expensive. But to be fair to CS, some things like fruits, beef etc. their quality is better.


2 weeks ago, I was browsing at the fish section at Great World’s CS Fresh. I was shocked that their fresh threadfin fillet was selling at $50/KG as compared to NTUC’s $66/KG!!! I had the impression NTUC FairPrice must be cheap thus I bought before at $66/kg. So angry, the price gap is very wide!

Then I saw vacuum-packed fresh seabass fillet. CS Fresh’s was selling at $22/kg while NTUC was selling at $28/kg. Aiyo, I had been buying the $28/kg ones from NTUC FairPrice.

I have bought threadfin/seabass fillet from NTUC FairPrice, so whatever savings I had from the cheaper goods I picked into my NTUC trolley would have been recovered by the threadfin or seabass I threw into my trolley unknowingly.

I wonder if NTUC FairPrice still remembers their roots and raison d’etre. Or is it due to sheer incompetence that their suppliers’ wares are more expensive than the atas CS Fresh?

I hardly shop at FP anymore unless there happens to be steep discounts. They are no longer an affordable supermarket, especially those Finest, really too fine for me lol.

Started to buy FP fresh milk from 5.45 for two cartons a few months back, then 5.75, today 5.85.

Same question from me too! I mainly buy from SS, which is the most convenient for me, and generally cheaper compared to FP and CS. And more and more FP outlets are now Finest.

I order online from FP, mainly the house brands. I think FP has the lowest minimum order to get free delivery (although there is a service charge).
