In the grand scheme of things, even if it can be used, it's a minor/negligible exemption - like 1 out of 40 university courses.
I read some courses in Uni allow exemption of modules for students taken relevant H3 subjects. Anyone know if this is true. -

I vaguely remember reading about this - for local universities, I think it only applies to those H3s which are under university professors? Not the ones taught in the JCs. But this was some years ago - please check again! For overseas universities, I believe some (but not all) US universities may grant some exemptions - again, this will need to be checked. I doubt any UK universities give exemptions. In general, it's best to assume that H3s will not give exemptions.

👌
There are several reasons, and some students probably have a mixture of reasons for taking H3? The ones you state are probably the primary ones - getting a head start on uni (but some students take H3 in a subject that they don't intend to take at uni), enhancing portfolio, and scholarship applications.
Others could be: enhancing uni applications (for some overseas ones, and some local courses that are highly competitive and not determined purely on grades), and for stretching (for those students who like to feel stretched). -
After i posted the query here, it crossed my mind I could try writing to my kid JC to ask too. Below is the reply:
In general, students will primarily pursue H3s if they have a personal interest in the subject, as only interest will sustain the student through the added course of study in Y6. This is as it’s also a time when the intensity of the regular H2 & H1 workload increases in preparation for the A-levels, in tandem with CCA commitments and regular school social life.
On the practical aspect, H3s are not a requirement for university admissions, nor for scholarships, nor module exemption. To that end, it pays for students to ensure that the essentials (H1/H2s) are done well, before looking further.
should the student has the capacity, inclination and personal interest to stretch himself further, it would not hurt him to take a H3. Of course, if his interests lie outside of these areas, there is no practical need for a H3.
Overall, H3s are meant for students to stretch themselves, and are just one example of pursuits beyond the syllabus in further academic depth and curiosity—nowadays, students are not limited to only this. To succeed in and enjoy pursuing H3s, given the intensity of the overall coursework in Y6, the inherent purpose has to be an internal self-driven motivation beyond practical benefits.
Students are encourage to own the decision, whichever way he chooses. -
very nice reply. And I may add that H3s are not the sole way to demonstrate academic interest or inclination in a certain subject. There are many other ways to demonstrate this - e.g. through reading a course, competitions, essays / writing on a topic, out of school interest group etc.

Yes, this is so nice - I recall that in our day, anything done outside the school would not be \"counted\" or recorded in the student profile. Not that there was much outside school in my day.

I think the tides have swung - anything done that is not traditional speaks of interest, passion, initiative, bold, dare, innovation

The traditional stuff has all been commoditized. The challenge is, now all of the other things are getting commoditized too (or will be by the time you get there). Both are still good for experience and development, so it really depends on why you are doing them.

H3 subject can be dropped anytime before registering it for A level exam. After register it for A level exam, an “absent” will be shown on result slip if fail to turn up for A level exam.

Anyone knows the distinction rate for H3? Is it true there is no benefit to taking it if one does not get distinction? My kid is neither applying to go Oxbridge or Ivy League nor applying for Govt scholarships.
