No right or wrong for sure. What suits other kids may not suit my kids, and vice versa. Only parents know their kids best. If parents don't know their kids well enough, speak to school teachers.
Parents like you and I together with their children can still choose either, no right or wrong.
Psle must count Chinese, this is one reason it is not totally reliable. But there are other reasons too. Students were not as mature in pri sch, or not motivated, not relevant to learning abilities.
I am not sure what enrichment you are referring to. A student in IP will go through the entire IP syllabus which is a stretch compared to those in Express. It is not just more content or faster content but the way it is taught is also different. The IP learning experience is different and that in itself is already enriching because it hones different skills. Of course not everyone wants to go out of their comfort zone. Again, no right or wrong. Choose what suits your child. -

Some of these students go through lots of past year PSLE papers, probably also lots of tuitions, to obtain the AL 4-6 PSLE result. To continue such good academic performance, they likely need to do exactly the same thing in IP school, do lots of pass year papers and tuitions too. In primary school they have 4 subjects. In secondary school they have 8. And we have all the special curriculum added in IP school too. These students need to think carefully whether the preparation methods that worked for them in primary school are sustainable in IP school.
If one scores AL4 to AL6 at PSLE, we can safely predict that he has high chance of scoring at O levels anyway. To me, the lure is NOT to AVOID the stress of another national exam, but WHY waste 18 to 24 months of Secondary school education mugging 10 year series and preparing for O levels when we know this kid will do well in O levels. Use that time to learn something ELSE, gain exposure to other skills to enrich his education journey. Isn't that the original intention of MOE to launch the IP?
Those other students that aced PSLE without much efforts and have that space capacities, and looking to stretch themselves further, then IP should not be a worry for them.
Most of the other students that aced PSLE are somewhere in between.
Students that aced PSLE are not all the same. -

agree. reason i consider IP is my gal may not be the best in class but she could cope well herself without tuition. Her only tuition since P1 is chinese because my wife worries she eat potato if didnt force he. All the way until P6, no other subject tuition yet she could get quite good result every year. My wife very happy she could get popular voucher every year,,,haha..

only start of P6 around Mar we asked her any subject she thinks she needs help with tuition, she asked for Maths and we send her to maths tuition. Her prelim is AL8 (she got 86,87,88,89
, i lol when i saw her scores), so i guess IP suite her if her psle can get in.

For us is simple. If only option is O then go O. If all options available, see any particular school the kid likes. Unlikely to purposely go for O for us I think coz need to go through an Exam.

Ya, not complicated. Dont choose IP for the wrong belief. IP still has exams and the bar is definitely not what is believed to be easy. Students in IP do not just stop studying and play the whole time, many go tuition to stay afloat. can be misleading to believe otherwise.

It’s true for P6 kids who are independent learners and can excel in their studies w/o much tuition, very likely they will enjoy IP.
However, I do not agree that kids who rely heavy on tuition/enrichment, can’t do well in IP. Parents send their kids to expensive tuition in TLL for all subjects, each term spends over $4K+, do you think these parents are only aiming for O-level?
But one thing to note, I feel that there is a difference between top tier JCs and other IPJCs. Maybe it’s not about IP or O levels. If you know that your kid’s character/self esteem easily wither in an ultra competitive and cut-throat environment, don’t opt for RI/HCI. Go to mid tier ones maybe more enjoyable, not necessary must take O level.
If parents’ ultimate aim is for kids to take A levels, then just skip the O level and go into IP. Less stress for the mothers too cos one less National exam to take. -
It also depend whether the decision making is focus on kids’ or parents’

At 11-12yo, if left to their own devices, it will be Roblox whole day

If kid is in IP, there won' be lots of past year papers to do anyway. Again, it depends on what we parents are looking for. Because the kid scores AL6, kid could be top 5% of his Pri school. He can now get into IP but everyone in the IP school used to be top 5% of their Pri school. Do parents expect their kids to again be top 5% of their IP school?

If kid is in IP, there won' be lots of past year papers to do anyway. You cannot find them. Again, it depends on what we parents are looking for. If the kid scored AL6, he could be top 5% of his Pri school. He can now get into IP but everyone in the IP school used to be top 5% of their Pri school. Do parents expect their kids to again be top 5% of their IP school? The IP curriculum is designed to TRAIN kids to be independent. Students cannot learn to be independent if parents hover around them like helicopter and micromanage every effort of theirs, afraid they may make mistakes and trip. If we let kid try, have faith in the system/IP school and teachers, then it is unlikely they will do badly all the way. At first, it is possible that some may enter IP and stumble at the steep learning curve because they are not independent. But by yr 2 or 4, they will find the way.

If a child is AL15-AL20 calibre (just giving a number to illustrate, not trying to belittle anyone), just having tons of tuition and doing even 100 exam papers per subject in Pri 6 are also unlikely to bring kid up to AL4 to AL6 standard in that short 8 to 10 months. Not impossible, but unlikely. Which is why kids with poor academic scores but enter IP schools with DSA tend to struggle a lot more academically.
