If kid is in IP, there won' be lots of past year papers to do anyway. Again, it depends on what we parents are looking for. Because the kid scores AL6, kid could be top 5% of his Pri school. He can now get into IP but everyone in the IP school used to be top 5% of their Pri school. Do parents expect their kids to again be top 5% of their IP school?
Some of these students go through lots of past year PSLE papers, probably also lots of tuitions, to obtain the AL 4-6 PSLE result. To continue such good academic performance, they likely need to do exactly the same thing in IP school, do lots of pass year papers and tuitions too. In primary school they have 4 subjects. In secondary school they have 8. And we have all the special curriculum added in IP school too. These students need to think carefully whether the preparation methods that worked for them in primary school are sustainable in IP school.
Those other students that aced PSLE without much efforts and have that space capacities, and looking to stretch themselves further, then IP should not be a worry for them.
Most of the other students that aced PSLE are somewhere in between.
Students that aced PSLE are not all the same. -

If kid is in IP, there won' be lots of past year papers to do anyway. You cannot find them. Again, it depends on what we parents are looking for. If the kid scored AL6, he could be top 5% of his Pri school. He can now get into IP but everyone in the IP school used to be top 5% of their Pri school. Do parents expect their kids to again be top 5% of their IP school? The IP curriculum is designed to TRAIN kids to be independent. Students cannot learn to be independent if parents hover around them like helicopter and micromanage every effort of theirs, afraid they may make mistakes and trip. If we let kid try, have faith in the system/IP school and teachers, then it is unlikely they will do badly all the way. At first, it is possible that some may enter IP and stumble at the steep learning curve because they are not independent. But by yr 2 or 4, they will find the way.

If a child is AL15-AL20 calibre (just giving a number to illustrate, not trying to belittle anyone), just having tons of tuition and doing even 100 exam papers per subject in Pri 6 are also unlikely to bring kid up to AL4 to AL6 standard in that short 8 to 10 months. Not impossible, but unlikely. Which is why kids with poor academic scores but enter IP schools with DSA tend to struggle a lot more academically. -

reminds me got one colleague spent 10K+ on her son's p6 final year tuition hoping to push his std up, gotten 23x, just like my son level (237).. when the tuition ctr called her to ask about his score, she chewed them up.. hahaha.. some parents really horrible,,,

Hmm… i agree adjust the expectation on the child can mitigate potential issue if those minority of students not able to adapt IP curriculum for some reason.

Based on my daughters feedback from the same IPJC, they said the smart ones are really smart. No need study so hard but JC1 promos all subjects high 80s/90s ( you only need 70 to get A). Some study so hard still fail miserably (S and U). I guess intrinsic ability is really important plus study methods too.

Dds have any idea if those failing miserably ones are usually from O level?

those IP group are already mostly \"smart\" group, so naturally in jc, these group higher chance do better. just like if you throw the gep group in, this group sure high chance top the class -
One observation I was told is that the IP ones are less hardworking while the O level kids are very hardworking. Probs due to drilling for O levels and the really hardworking ones do very well in IPJCs as well while the IP ones are still slackers. Maybe true test will come at A level where everyone starts getting more serious and after stepping down from cca which are very time consuming (it is also noted that most leadership pos may likely hv been taken by the IP ones).
