I can’t see how reading H3 would affect the candidate’s H2 in any negative way actually, if the child is generally interested in the subject.

That said, my kid doing H3 has determined that he is not reading the H3 subject in university.

If one qualifies, taking up a H3 depends on how a child wishes to allocate his or her time - there are many able kids who opt out of H3 too, for a variety of pursuits which may or may not be related to an academic subject.

If the child is looking to apply for a Physics or Math related university course in a top UK university, then I would say, go for the H3.

If kid is facing a plateau in learning a h2 subj, will doing it in H3 expand the viewpoint? If kid is doing well in a h2 subject, will doing it in H3 drown the interests? Am referring to H3 physics and math. Kid is considering one or none. Any comments?
Do one will do unless the kid is very very strong. Is he doing Further Maths?

H3 Maths quite ok, lots of mechanics and can help H2 Physics too. But H3 Physics has too much waves, optics and some particle physics which are more cheem, so unless very keen in these areas, else hard to grasp.

          Thanks everyone for the input.

The decision is to do 1h3 or to do none.
After attending trial lesson in sch, Kid commented that H3 physics appears more manageable (eg like olympiad/application type) while H3 math is very challenging despite doing well in h2 math. He is not doing f math.
Is he v keen in any? I think he is just fomo and may want to try out a while to see how it’ll be.
Considering H3 math as he intends to do math in local uni, but I worry pre matured exposure will steer him away.

You mean not even interviewed? And H3 is an A level exam - IB students don't take those as far as I know.

You will need to do decently well in the admission tests like the TMUA, or LNAT, or ENGAA, or BMAT etc depending on what you are applying for. Singaporeans don't ace these exams that easily especially if you have no time to prepare for them, or if the tests are in the middle of your A levels!

It really goes beyond the A levels and IB. You don't need perfect grades in those to be shortlisted.

The interview invites are starting to go out for Oxbridge and Imperial College - for this year, there are applicants with no H3s and no Olympiads getting interview invites.

There are many factors that go into the applications that we may not know how we have fared - ranging from school/teacher recommendations, to the quality of one's personal statement and choice of A level subjects, and how the university considers them.

Also, the admissions test results. Nowadays, most of the top UK universities (even beyond Oxbridge) do require candidates to undertake assessments - it's a standardized way of comparing applicants.

Yes, that's what I was told.

The 6As case without H3 and extra, got through 2 rounds, but failed 3rd round interview.

Those colleges can afford to just pick straight As for interviews. You don't really get a higher chance with more and more As.

Their local public school kid may be taking 3 subjects only. Then, 3As is good enough.

But they may be firing on 20% potential only. The type who can chill and support the bar on the night before exams. On the other hand, your 6As + extras may be squeezing blood from rock already..

To be fair, the colleges won't give special considerations to \"extras\" that others (on a global basis) do not have opportunity for.

The initial interview may just be a \"tell me about yourself\". The later one is the \"fit\" test. If you are not invited, you don't fit.
quite illluminating to hear it from this angle, thanks.
