      good day!

my kid got the PSLE total score of 9.
      Math 1
      Sci 2
      Eng 2
      Chi 4

we thinking to apply following options at the north east area:
      1. Nan Chiau High School
      2. Edgefield Sec School
      3. Yusof Ishak Secondary School

the kid likes to play chess... but actually spending most of his time on phone, seems no stress at all even before PSLE exams. sigh

      Qs:
what are the chances of getting into Nan Chiau?
any other suitable schools could recommend?

      thanks much
Based on your school choices, I am assuming you live in Punggol or Sengkang. Why not cast your net wider and consider other even better schools, since your son has a very good score of AL9?

      Consider the following schools:
      1. Victoria School (offers chess as a CCA)
      2. Catholic High
      3. St Joseph's Institution
      4. Temasek JC

Do you know if N(A) and O Level pupils get to mingle a lot during school hours, e.g. recess, CCA time?
The vast majority of fsbb schools choose to have mixed form classes. That means each form class will have G3, G2 and G1 students. They mingle during the fun lessons like Art, cooking, music, etc. They only split during academic lessons like EL, MT, Math, Sci, Humanities etc.

But a small number of fsbb schools choose to group the classes according to their chosen cca. Do find out more from your target school.

Congrats on the good result. With al9, and from those you listed, I guess you live in Pg/sk. I would definitely suggest you check out Anderson secondary (AL10) in amk which after an open house visit and read up, it's a good school to consider.

Is it true I heard there is no more O level or N level and everyone takes a 4y programme no more sec 5. The national exams are administered and set locally by MOE based on G1/2/3 contents?

              Good afternoon
My boy got his PSLE result AL 21 ( Group 2 or 3)
              Math - 3
              Science-6
              English-6
              Chinese-6
We stay at Tampines. As we can choose group 3 and 2 . Is it better to choose good school for group 2 or average secondary school for group 3?

He like NAS so have plan to choose:
              1 NAS
              2.Dunman Sec
              3 Pasir Ris Sec
              4. Tampines Sec
              5. Bedok Green
              6 .Bedok South or View
As his COP is 21 , May I have some advise if it is more suitable go to group 2 as higher change to get it compare to group 3?

For group 2 means need to learn for 5 years . Is it possible to finish in 4 years if he has a good performance in his subject due to SSB system?

We are abit confused as he can choose group 3 or 2 .

Thank you for your tips and advise .
              Really appreciate
I see that your listed 6 choices are in increasing order of COP for the G2 stream. Good, u know the MOE rule that states all 6 choices must be the same stream.

He can go to G2 stream. Based on his psle grades, he will get to do G3 Math. The other subjects he will start on G2 first. If do well in Sec 1, will get chance to upgrade the relevant subject(s) to G3 level.

Looking at his Sci/EL/CL grades, i think he will struggle if choose G3 stream, because G3 stream default all subjects take at G3 level first. Dun forget he will have to start his History, Geog & Lit at G3 level also, which is very tough if his EL is poor.

Whereas pick G2 stream, the humanities marking is not so strict. I have seen some G2 Lit papers, the kids are actually highly guided in the qn paper how to phrase their answers. Not as difficult as G3.

All the best. I think NAS is a good choice for G2.

Hi… DS has scored AL10. We are looking at following options with COPs

                1. TJC IP - 9
                2. ACS Independent O - 8
                3. Victoria School O - 10
                4. St Andrews O - 10
                5. SJI O - 10
                6. ACS Barker O - 10

One of the consideration is Mother Tongue (Hindi). First 4 schools have it on campus during school hours. Last 2 don’t and hence he will be required to take Sat classes.

Would appreciate guidance on this thought process.

Hi would like to seek parents’ view on the secondary school selections.

                  My daughter got AL 19

                  Math - 6
                  Science-6
                  English-2
                  Chinese-5

We are staying at Simei area. In 2 years time will move to Bedok Reservoir hence looking at schools in the East.

She is from Saint Anthony Canossian Primary but does not seem to be really keen to go to her Affiliated secondary school SACS. She likes music & is interested in journalism, so we are considering these:

                  1 Pasir Ris Crest
                  2. Pasir Ris
                  3 Bedok South
                  4. Bedok View
                  5 Tampines
                  6 ?

We would appreciate if you could share some insights about our choices. Should we convince her to go with the affiliated school?

                  Thank you in advance!

“Option of a Fifth Year in Secondary School

The option of a fifth year in secondary school will continue to be available for eligible students to pace their learning and take subjects at a more demanding level to access more post-secondary pathways.”

                    Source: https://www.moe.gov.sg/microsites/psle-fsbb/full-subject-based-banding/secondary-school-experience.html

As for your other qn, I can’t find a good source that elaborates on what the new SEC is, but if u notice the wiki on the old O level cert, the full name is quite interesting becos it shows that the O level cert is already jointly “set” by both Cambridge and Singapore. Eg some papers like MT and SS are set by local SG examiners.

The new SEC cert is just a cosmetic name change. The paper cert will indicate (like A levels) the G1/G2/G3 level (akin to H1/H2/H3 level) of the subject taken.

I doubt the setters or the standards will change.

Your options are either right on the dot or 1/2 points below. Very very risky. At COP 10 likely need to ballot, you may end up not getting any of the above schools and will be posted to balance schools by MOE, AFTER everyone has gotten their schools.

Hope parents understand how the COP works. A lot of misunderstandings I feel. COP is not the min criteria set by MOE or the school. It’s a reference point, based on the score of the last student from PSLE 2022 that got into the school. This year, the COP may be different, though likely to stay the same for most schools. It’s based on supply and demand for PSLE 2023 cohort. So if the school is popular this year, more better scorers apply for the school, the COP may go down. So it’s better to have afew schools in your 6 options that is +2/3/4 AL of your own scores.

If not, you may end up not getting any of the choices, especially for popular schools. Especially so for non citizens .
