It’s as if I am a FTMW and cannot supervise my kids all the time and if they don’t do well, then I will ask myself, “what if” I were a SAHM, would things be better???
This is not really what-if qn. Sounds like in your case, it’s probably a good investment if 1. It helps in bringing up the overall Chinese proficiency to get a shot at BSP which your girl eventually got it? 2. If Chinese is the only weak subject that may separate the child from
getting the ESIS or entry into top Sch, then I think worth a good shot at spending the investment esp if you cannot teach yourself ?
I do know people who spends $2000/mth on tuition in pri Sch even though the eventual aim is to go to non-ivy UK pre-college after O level and child already has an affiliated sec Sch. I cannot understand such parent mentality.
Assuming that I know my kid is not the academically inclined type, so even though my kid is able to make it back to his/her affiliated sec sch, I foresee that my kid is unlikely to compete in our local A levels system, more likely than not, he/she will go to Poly and from there, work for few years then maybe apply for (night) Uni.
Then in this case, if I can afford the fees, why not just let my kid exit the local academic rat race and go overseas after O to take a different route to get a degree? -
Actually though dh & I never discussed face to face. We know that could be one solution…we are very ok with Poly route if can make it and kid is ok. But if the kid for some unknown reasons don’t properly absorb then how leh? Overseas studies also need to take exams mah.

Firstly, you need to find out what are the reasons your DD cannot absorb.

Is it due to some learning difficulties (like attention deficit) or is it due to poor time management? Or does she have poor understanding of some fundamental concepts?
When some kids attend TLL, where the pace is very fast, they may catch no ball because their fundamentals are weak. I used to give my niece 1-1 tuition when she was P6. As I found that her foundation was weak, I went through with her all the entire P5 curriculum one more time before we moved on to work on P6 topics. If my niece had been sent to TLL, she wouldn’t do well because she already lagged in P5 topics, then how could she absorb P6 topics taught at accelerated speed? -
I met a young S’porean in his 2nd year at King’s College on Scholarship & aiming to complete his PhD there too. He was from a neigbourhood school & nvr really did well, finished studies in Poly but he started waking up & did well to score a scholarship. I can tel hes very driven & very active in the church he’s involved in London. He’s a leader to many young S’poreans in the Spore Student Club there.
I met ano Sporean young fellow who started working for the church in London & doing Arts. They all mature late but nvr too late, as can be witnessed fr the King’s College Sporean student who desire to return & serve in govt sector & seen how much more effective our govt is compared to English govt. He’s able to see many things in life as he witnessed the local community in England & involved in the volunteer work to bring food & clothings to the less provided families.
Hope this will encourage parents nvr to give up on their child & hope it inspire some young ppl to continue to strive for their future in areas they’re interested in. -

Just learnt from another parent, a full TLL tuition from young can spend $100k :yikes: and from N2 can hit $200k (double yikes!) Most are not thinking of Med course bah.
Luckily both my kids are ok to pick Uni courses that their results bring them to. They do not have a course that die die they must get in.
But there are kids who are fixated since young to study only Medicine, Law, Veterinary etc. I have seen two friends downgrade their properties to send their kids overseas for Medicine course. Estimated cost of $600K and since my friends have more than 1 kid each, so they need to think of the siblings too. I suppose tuition will never cost me close to $300K if I can use tuition to send my kids into local med/law
$100k + 60k, can go overseas after poly liao or at least pri uni with overseas experience. -
Not all TLL teachers are good. It’s typically their materials that were were developed. But if the teacher just follow curriculum w/o properly explaining or guiding the weaker students, the fees are down the drain.
DS experienced a few such teachers & a fellow parent pointed me to the good ones & we switched class, thereafter DS not only excel but was ahead of his class. What the teacher did was to personally guide each child, whilst issuing more higher level & kept going incl those Olympaid type exercises for Math. She was dedicated to point will stay behind to guide the slower ones or arrange her non-teaching time.
We later found Mr Sherman Tseng who partnered with a curriculum writer fr TLL & did much better content teaching & materials.
I wld say, parents need to be wise & not crowd wit the flock. Choose the right tutor appropriate for the child, if they don’t work, quickly find a suitable & switch. I don’t wish for any child to waste their learning time & get discourage for poor teachers. -

Yes, most may not be thinking of Med course when their kids were just N2. However, why are there parents willing to spend on expensive tuition? Because they believe that if their kids can achieve good academic results, more doors/opportunities will open up for their kids when it’s time to choose schools/Uni courses. If my P6 kid can score AL4, practically can choose any sec sch of their choice.

DH’s staff took one year no pay leave to help her P6 son. Estimated one year lost income of $300K+. This I cannot quite comprehend. Might as well send the child to TLL since N2? -

Full tuition for all subjects comes with a hefty price. $200k plus no childhood.

Parents can choose between giving kid a full childhood wihtout tuition from day 1 and pay extra for a good tertiary education. It may turn out paying less than what they would be paying for full tuition.
I see it differently, paying $300-400 permonth for tuition for one subject in order to get top 10% for ESIS value of $200 per month, I just dont get it. MAybe it is just me. Just saying only. adiós -

I gave her examples I read on some people difficulties..but till now I still haven't received a good reason. Initially she was unhappy even cried for me to even suggest that..then I told her some didn't know it themselves till they become adults. After a while, she asked what if one really have the situation and what can they do. I may not be correct... I told her I don't think we could do much other than working around the problems.

But can tell you niece is very obedient type. This group of students got higher chance to succeed I feel.
To add, my dd has this ability of total shut off from things she doesn't like. She mentioned that more than once to me when she was younger. She was so unhappy and can see a kind of messy miserable expression on face for a period of time near exam during when I was feeling that I really need to interfere in her studies..then luckily dh came along told me to let just her do it on her own..then the change has became so opposite..saw a much happier girl of her original self. I asked her to drop subject coz really got no time to revise but she insisted and told me not to worry much..I can only just let her.
