If boys did better than last yr, in that case maths and sci papers shld be relatively harder than last yr since boys are generally better in maths and sci. Or languages papers were easier than last yr or marking is less stringent.

No time to find out if there was a higher proportion of boys in this batch.

I did not mean that more boys scored better in math sci compared to the girls.

I meant that if those subjects were easier in 2023 compared to 2022 then higher volume of boys scoring better in 2023 would result in the top boys schools experiencing more better-scoring applicants. Thus explaining the uptick in cop.

Yes. It seems so. Suppose to receive some info pack via PG from sec school but the school website said PG is not available at the moment.

If overall exam std was easier this year, we would see the effect for both girls and boys. But it could be njc took in fewer dsa or sji took in more this year too.

There is a general stereotype that boys do better in math and science compared to girls.

So if the math & science were easier this year, there would have been a massive glut of (example) AL1s for those 2 subjects, pulling up the boys’ scores vis-a-vis previous years. That is what i meant.

I read that gender differences in math and related spatial abilities aren’t largely evident until children reach adolescence. That would mean not until when in secondary school. And it’s caused by stereotyping

Thx for the article. In any case, my boy did not fit the stereotype. He was considered below average in math & sci in his all-boys primary school. Though not below average in the national cohort.

And somebody can probably confirm (or debunk) that more boys than girls top the primary school level math Olympiads.

Sometimes ago I read an interview of a CEO. Her style of managing the company is to gather people
that are smarter than her to run the company. She thinks if otherwise, her subordinates keep coming to her for solutions, it will not be good for the company. Sometimes having the ability to gather and manage group of intelligent people is more sought after than a rocket scientist.

Actually the gender differences in STEM abilities are quite evident in primary school students as well when we look at Math Olympiad results and gender divide in specialised schools such as SST and NUSH.
