Exactly, if no problem, why need to change. Forcing everyone to change like that... Huh
We were pleasantly surprised when we tap our oyster card from more than 10years ago and still worked when we return to London in June last yr. -

Pardon? Your $3 is for a new card or for the transfer of balance from an existing card to a new card?
I better change it to Simply Go then. Think need deduct $3 for new card for transfer balance. -

MKS
Better talk here. Abt letting 17yo make final decision etc. I don't know about other/majority of the kids. My two at home I m already experiencing their pressure of breaking free.
There are some decisions kids can make, some kids cant make.
Eg, they can decide what to eat at the sch canteen.
You have to learn to let go bit by bit, else they would not be able to \"fly\". You cant keep them under your wings for long. -

Interestingly I had a similar conversation with my sisters just last weekend. Among us, I am the one who gave my kids the most freedom. Dh and I taught DD and DS how to take public transport when they were in upper pr and the moment they started sec sch, they take public transport to school. Which I thought was the norm anyways. They manage their weekly allowances since pr sch and in sec sch monthly allowances. On top of that they also get to keep and manage 50% of other additional monies from angbaos, etc. They get to decide what they want to do with their monies, with our advise and unputs of course but ultimately they decide. They were free to go out to play with friends in our estate in the evening without us tagging along. Though we have trackers installed on their phones, we stop tracking them after mid of sec 1, unless they go radio silent which was never.

After they got their PSLE results, they were the ones who made the choice of which school or path they wanted to take, again with our inputs and advise.
For DD getting into a school with her preferred CCA and getting into that CCA matters to her and that was what we went with. She knew what she wanted to pursue after o levels and worked towards early admission for that course and got it. After poly, even though her grades got her a placement in uni she chose to work and do a part time specialist course. She worked part-time throughout her poly course and since year one the company already offered her a full time permanent position after she graduates with a sign on bonus. She was recently promoted.
For DS, it was a matter of O level or IP path. He chose to go O level as he was not confident about IP and that was what we went with. After he found out more about IP in his school and was confident he can cope with it, he worked towards that and made it in. Now he has completed his IB with very good results.
By contrast, elder sis did not let nephew have as much freedom. She tracks his whereabouts and monitors his class attendance even now. She was adamant about him going to JC and it took me, his tutor, her own daughter and a few friends to convince her to let him go to poly as we can see that he is not suited for JC. He was never allowed to meet his friends to play in the estate until he was in upper sec sch. He gets weekly allowances until recently they allowed him monthly and he is not given access to any of his angbaos, etc. She keeps saying that he is not as meticulous or responsible as DD or DS that is why she needs to manage him like that. From what I see, yes he tends to be more careless and clueless about stuff but some of it has to do with her hovering. Maybe she is like that cos she had a hard time conceiving and had basically given up on having another child when he came along. So she is more protective of him.
Younger sis kids are still young, in pr sch but she is a mix of me and elder sis. Not letting go as much as I did but not controlling as much as elder sis.
She asked me how come I dared to just let them be, I told her I did not 'let them be' but I believe in teaching them to make their own decisions and owning their decisions. The sooner they become independent and able to make their own decision, the sooner I regain my freedom, that was my main motivation.

You don't know the extent of pain she needs to endure. Not one day or one week leh. Results, I told dd whatever better than F9 is bonus.
Sigh.....不要自欺欺人吧, they even don't have the freedom to join their favorable CCA in secondary school and had to closed their room door and cried - what kind of freedom have been given to them? :?[/quote] -

Don't think it is fair for us to 'judge' MrsKS decision and say that she is deluding herself.

We do not know the extent of the issues that her DD has so we are not in the position to criticise her decision. -
