Its a froum post from a student from NUSH somewhere. I had forgotten where it is and maybe its been a year or 2 ago. I only remeber that she said first day reporting to the school with all the peers and didnt say its a ceremony or anything.
Total intake for YLL and LKC for 2023 is only around 400 students (250 and 150 respectively), not including Duke NUS since this is post graduate program. Please note there were surge of intake during the COVID period but the number have been moderate down.
Absolute quantity wise in each local medicine school is true both R and H (not only R) have the most. This is not surprising since both R and H cohort are the biggest in SG, about 5-6x more than NUSH!
Overseas medicine, apart from the cost, may also pose challenges to get residency placement, except one doesn’t intent to practice in SG.
Nobody wear secondary school uniform in any chance, at least for the med course, not sure what the person meant by first day? Maybe can elaborate? -

Yes around 40 odd applications to Oxbridge annually and this application year 2023, big shift to Cambridge even though total numbers to Oxbridge remain the same. The Oxford applicants tend to Humanes like Med, Geography , Econs and single Science subjects while the Math , Engineering and Natural Science tripos are more popular for Cambridge.
Counsellors confirmed that for 2023 - offers from Cambridge 28, offers from Oxford 4.manorway\" post_id=\"2128476\" time=\"1707055371\" user_id=\"9303:

My only comment is that phtthp is a RI/RGS forumer who is always active during my thread day n particularly interested and participate very actively in this NUSH thread including providing valuable info to parents/kids who are keen on NUSH.
I am a parent of NUSH alumni (2016) and have not been active in Kiasuparent for a long while. The initial goal of establishing NUS High in 2005 is to accelerate the development, nurturing of innovation spirit of STEM talents in Singapore. To date, NUSH is barely 18 years old and Phtthp’s comments are much "regrettable" given his/her participation in this NUSH thread.
As a parent of NUSH alumni, I would say that NUSH has to a large extent achieve the motto of "Experiment, Explore and Excel " in the field of STEM for all the kids joining NUSH and these has been exhibited and manifested in their academic success, careers , no of PHDs of the alumni.
I would not give detail of specific examples and names here, but here are some that you can take as a yardstick for measurement of "success" in nurturing STEM in Singapore
1. Highest No of Olympiads medalist /participants since inception (2005) (at Cohort size per year)
2. Highest No of obtaining or perusing PhDs per student populations per school in SG (since inception in 2005 based on Cohort of 200 per year ) - you need to check with Student office to get the estimated no and where our alumni are doing STEM research. will be good to find out the percentage per batch
3. For its top 10% annual graduate, the highest ratio of intake into MIT, Caltech, Stanford, IVY league, OxBridge in Singapore JC/IP schools. Students with NUSH branding have special privilege.
4. Most NUSH graduates entering Local Uni STEM course are always almost among the the top first class graduates. Something special to mention about NUSH unique learning n exploratory environment
5. No of in seed VC and NUSH alumni involved in entrepreneurship n start-ups. Many NUSH especially those with CS are in AI, data science jobs in Singapore
Yes, my DD and some of friends in their batch are currently doing remarkable researches in Biomedical, Bioengineering, Applied physics , AI and Quantum Computing in Uni like Caltech, MIT, Stand ford, Princeton, Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge. Most of them are ASTAR or state agency-sponsored scholars.
I also know that there are many alumni (not necessary the top 10%) in many past n recent batches doing reseach in Local and US/UK and European University.
These are some information that I can share to parents who wish to know where the NUSH alumni today… -

Congrats to NUS High! It's a far higher success rate than any of the other top JCs in Singapore.

We know confirmed offers are 28 for Cambridge and roughly 32 applied from graduating cohort. There could be earlier years (boys who only applied year after graduation while in NS as with the other JCs) who applied too.
Congrats to NUS High! It's a far higher success rate than any of the other top JCs in Singapore.
The success rate is evident as a percentage of cohort .. but it is to be expected as the pool of NUSHigh students were already preselected for higher abilities in math, science academics. Without having to chase standard testing like O or As , there is flexibility to explore upwards and in depth to build the experiences and supracurriculars highly selective unis want to see as evidence that the student has explored or even excelled to show track record and aptitude for the domains they have chosen for higher learning.
And this brings us to the crux of discussion on uni admission trends - does NUSH add value to the bringing the child to the final destination of high learning ?
At DSA entry, most parents are still worried about whether it is a fit for their child and whether they can get in.
Having been through the journey, I think at that initial point NUSH is worth an evaluation for any child who has aptitude and passion for STEM because if they do thrive, then these dream unis or colleges are very attainable because the school culture in critical thinking , growth mindset and curriculum in research , Olympiad, electives , non-graduating courses at NUS and bountiful leadership/exchange/competition opportunities just help the students stand out. The average NUSH likely can run out of space in the awards/medals/achievement listings for Uni or scholarship applications.
Also, application cycle to NUS and NTU is run earlier and closes even before IB ( for NUS) or A levels (for NTU) results are out. It is not uncommon to have the students receive offers like eScholar or Renaissance engineering programmes or the non-interview faculties in days after application closes. -

28.5% success rate.
In 2023, 32 applied and 28 offers from Cambridge. 87.5% success rate. That is a huge jump which is hard to ignore.
Just coincidental that the 2023 applicants are that much stronger or NUSH did something differently to prepare the applicants? -
If you are part of the school or alumni, you may want to check with the counsellors on how the process has changed. :?
My understanding was it is more or less the same though this year, they applied with final grades. This is something that IBs and As can’t do as they have not even completed their exams. Thus, all offers to NUSHigh are only conditional on financial guarantee and only for Math, the step admission tests criteria as with all applicants. In terms of process, IB and A guys then hv to worry if they can clear the conditional grade offers , unlike NUSHigh diploma holders. Exams done and dusted by Oxbridge application timings whereas the other JCs are stressing over exams in Oct. But this process/timimg is already set up like that for many years so very forward thinking parents who are in the know like NUSHigh for the best possible foot forward in highly selective Uni applications.
The rest of us get pleasantly surprised as we cross the bridge and begin to understand why they want the students to board full year in Y5 - to push them out of comfort zone to get used to living independently.
It could also be because this particular cohort is strong in the supras that Oxbridge favour- I understand that there are 20+ int’l Olympiad medallists and maybe another 20-30 more national Gold medallists. If you include silvers and rare bronzes, it’s probably 40% of the entire cohort!
Add 20+ gold medallists in Science fairs and not to mention 5-6 published research papers. Also, it may be that the students applied to the domains they showed strong profiles in. The principal and a few teachers are also Oxbridge alumni and that could also have helped the students make wiser faculty/college choices, though it would hv kicked in 2-3 yrs before. It will be interesting to see the final figures from Oxbridge in a few months.
Was also told the early decisions for Ivy and MIT were positive. :rahrah:
This pattern is highly encouraging that the school is hitting the mark for Class of 2023 on what they hv set out to achieve since inaugural batch Class of 2009. I must stress that not all of them want to go overseas… the best part of this school is they just allow the student to grow and evolve at their pace. Culture is accepting and collegial.
