There is one. You can find it in Popular. Front cover is the same as the text but longer book. It's a good guide.

My nephew who is in Sec 2 this year, said he did not learn History in Sec 1. Only Geog. Then this year in Sec 2, they learn History and no Geog. Weird isn’t it? How to complete 2 years’ of syllabus in 1 year?

from my understanding, history and geog compulsory at sec 1/2...
for sec 1 history, it's on china, india and southeast asia.
however, son told me sec 1 history is going to change syllabus (according to his teacher who is attending course). -

They probably have the same no. of class hours overall, so I don't see this as an issue. -

Some of the schs do 1st half yr Hist/ geog and 2nd half yr geog/ Hist...
So it works out to be the same.... -
You guys are right.
They probably have the same number of hours for the subject. It didn’t occur to me before -

The history syllabus has been changed from india, china and southeast asia to history of singapore. Here are the skills required for lower secondary:
Inference (What can you infer from Source A about the living conditions of early Singapore etc.)
Inference on Purpose (What is the message/purpose of Source A) - more complex than Inference
Reliability (How reliable is Source A?)
Comparison (To what extent is Source A and Source B similar?)
Geography and History essays are similar in format.
Speaking as a student studying in Sec 2 this year. -

history at sec 1 is about india/china and southeast asia. all those inference and evidence to support is really no joke...requires in-depth reading. I saw the marks allocation at the back of a title, in order to gain 4-5 marks is no joke but definitely better than 死背 dates.
next year sec 2 is on history of Singapore. quite interesting to read the text...of course not that fun as a student. -
Hi everyone
DD1 is done with the Os and in the course of the packing up, I found a good condition copy of a History book titled - Unit 1 European Dominance & Expansion in SE Asia in the late 19th century; Publisher is Pearson and this is part of a series of textbooks named " All About History".
It’s in good condition because it was only published sometime mid last year and DD only used it for reference since she had already some notes in hand that late in the journey.
Nonetheless, she found it a good reference and was thankful for the teacher’s recommendation of this textbook.
DD2 is not doing full History so she won’t ever need this textbook so I am happy to pass this on. SE Asian History was taught to DD only in Sec 4.

Do you have any good guide book to recommend for sec 2?
There is actually a pretty good History assessment book, which I use in my lessons and would recommend that all students buy, whether or not they intend to hire a tutor.meinteel:
Yes, there are history assessment and exam papers but they are pointless. History, unlike Maths or even English has no standard answers. Answer keys in these assessment are usually insufficient.
While difficult and more expensive, it makes more sense to hire a History tutor for your child. For one, they can mark the History essays & SBQs as well as explain to your child the many techniques.
What is the difference between narrating a point and elaborating & showing an example of a point? What is the difference between lifting a point and inferring from a point? How do I actually Elaboration, and evaluate a point?
It's a book by Longman and it's called Developing Skills for Modern World History by Lim Bee Ting. The reason for my recommendation is that the book teaches students how to answer SBQs and SEQs.
Many of my students told me that they have all the content, but when faced with exam questions, they don't know how to answer or where to start. Then they end up regurgitating all the info they learnt in class, which obviously, would not get them the marks.
The book is available at Popular, and last I checked, second-hand copies are also available at one of the stores selling old books at Bras Basah Complex.
Having said that, for students who are weaker in the subject (failing or getting only borderline passes), it's still better to get a tutor to guide them along, as the above forummer has said.

Hi all,
It's great to see that there is an informal support group here for History.
Having taught at Band 1 secondary schools for years, I have seen many students, even those who are linguistically gifted, struggle in History and Social Studies (Combined Humanities).
Actually, as long as the student is willing to put in a little time each week to practice, consistent, accurate and specific feedback is the key to improvement. I see many of you here asking about tuition. If you would like to hire a quality tutor who has MOE experience, it's going to cost.
You may wish to (this is for Upper Sec students, best to start in Sec 3):
1. Buy the current year's SS and/or History Elective Ten Year Series (I have always used SAP Education's as they arrange them by topics).
2. Have your dd or ds try 1-2 questions a week (it should not take more than 45 min per week, including pulling out school notes for reference if needed).
3. Start with the Structured Essay Questions as your dd or ds would likely have chapter notes from their schools teachers they can readily refer to.
4. Have dd/ds ask school history/SS teacher to give feedback on the work. If you dd/ds is really shy, ask him/her not to worry! I don't know any MOE teacher who is not willing to help a student who is polite and motivated! Let dd/ds know that they should give the teacher about a week to get back to them, as this is on top of their usual marking workload.
5. Once dd/ds receives the work back, remember to thank the teacher and ask if there are any areas for improvement. Verbal feedback, no matter how brief, helps.
If your dd/ds can do this consistently, there is no need for expensive tuition. And your dd/ds will develop invaluable self-mastery skills that will stand him/her in good stead in JC/Poly/Uni.
